Haven’t had too many black IPAs so this is difficult to rate. I find the mixture of a stout and IPA to be very enticing. As an IPA, however, I believe the hop bitterness needs to be more prominent than they are in this brew. Outside of being somewhat malt-centric, this is a very nice and enjoyable beer if you forget about it as an IPA. Suttree (6484) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - AUG 28, 2011
Bottle from Shag at the Suttree Appreciation Day. Pours brown, with no head to speak of. Odd aroma - grape, coffee, and some burnt toast. Flavor is pretty straight forward Black IPA (I guess...) - coffee and burnt notes, then a decent hop bitterness. BiochemProf (179) - Boone, North Carolina, USA - OCT 4, 2011
Dark black/brown cola colored pour with a very rapidly fading khaki head. Nice pine/citrus hop aroma over subtle malty notes. Coffee chocolate mocha flavor with a blast of hop bitterness. Medium bodied with medium-high tingly carbonation and moderate astringency. Very nice. One of my favorite Olde Hickory beers. Bottle, from Triangle Wine Company. has a serve by 4/2012 date. Good aroma, sweet and roasty. Pine, little earthy mossy, chocolate. Dark orangy brown color, good head minor lace. Bitter sweet flavor. Meduim body, creamy mouthfeel, dry bitter finish. Pretty tasty, nicely mixed. aroma was kind of mellow, flavor got nicer as it warmed. ross (2146) - weddington, North Carolina, USA - DEC 23, 2011
Bottle. Black colored pour with a tan head on it. Smell is hoppy, malty, and has a fair amount of roasted chocolate in the nose. Taste sweet and hoppy, smooth and easy to drink. Refreshing to a certain degree...followed it up with a Stone Sublimely - no comparison.

Not much on the nose, but what is there smells very good. It doesn't look so great either. Dark brown and cloudy. But who cares? I didn't by this to look at and sniff. It tastes very good. Hoppy with a bunch of chocolate. Really good interpretation of cascadian dark.

On tap. Pours a near clear dark brown with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of earthy grass and dark grains as well as a pine bitterness. Flavor has more pine and resin with a creamy dark grain backing. Lubiere (14133) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 5, 2014
A dark brown ipa with a thin mocha head. In aroma, bitter chocolate malt with herbaceous character, floral hops, resinous, strange. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate with good floral hops, resinous, grapefruit pulp, nice and smooth. On tap at Olde Hickory Station.
