3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Haven’t had too many black IPAs so this is difficult to rate. I find the mixture of a stout and IPA to be very enticing. As an IPA, however, I believe the hop bitterness needs to be more prominent than they are in this brew. Outside of being somewhat malt-centric, this is a very nice and enjoyable beer if you forget about it as an IPA.
Bottle thanks to Santa. Little older than I like my hoppy beers but it held up decent t. Pours out black with a small tan head. Aroma is of roast, chocolate, sweet syrup, bitter citrus and grassy hops, light soy sauce. Taste is solid, muted citrus and grassy hops, chocolate, toasted malt, roast, a decent bite of bitterness still. Ratman197 (15109) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - OCT 13, 2015
Bomber poured a clear reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromad of roasted malt, earthiness, grapefruit zest and light pine. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of roasted malt, earthiness, cocoa, light pine and a hint of grapefruit with a smooth dry bitter lingering roasty finish. llcooldave (1219) - San Antonio, Texas, USA - APR 10, 2015
Pours a respectable black with a touch of ruby in it. Aroma is amazing... dark chocolate, some espresso and a touch of smoke rounds out the awesome nose. Somewhere though, there is a bit of sweet citrus playing in the nose. Clean flavor of citrus and pine followed by dark roasted malt and smokey cocoa. Overall, this was really pleasurable to drink. Aroma: It has a light roasted malt and light hop aroma, feels a hint dull, but not bad.
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a creamy head on top.
Flavor: It has a clean, balanced flavor, with a light roast, and a light bitterness as well.
Palate: This one feels a touch thin, pretty easy drinking, with a light dry finish.
This is an alright Black IPA, not a favorite of mine, but something I didn’t dislike either.
My Bottom Line:Lubiere (14121) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 5, 2014
Toasted malts and resinous hops combine in this balanced Black IPA.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam protects the mahogany-hued brown.
-Earthy angles appear from the malt-hop combination.
-Drinkability is rather high.
-The flavor profile is not intense for the style, which I appreciate.
On tap at the Olde Hickory Station.
A dark brown ipa with a thin mocha head. In aroma, bitter chocolate malt with herbaceous character, floral hops, resinous, strange. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate with good floral hops, resinous, grapefruit pulp, nice and smooth. On tap at Olde Hickory Station. NeoHippie2 (1074) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - OCT 1, 2014
Bottle. Black pour with a khaki head. Grassy and piney hop aromas abound. Flavor is bone dry overly hopped stout. Take this review with a grain of salt I don’t care for black ipas. This just comes across as an unbalanced stout to me. woodychevy (874) - - MAY 21, 2014
From a bomber. Pours black and opaque with a decent sized khaki head. Nice roasted malt aroma- smoky, chocolate, earth, coffee. Taste is the same and it drinks like it means it. Mouthfeel is pretty slick and full- almost drinks more like a stout but tons of hops pretty much negate that feeling quickly. Nice bitterness to it. Like a happy marriage of stouts and IPA’s. Easy to sip on- could be a summer or winter beer. Clever.
