COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Carolus Magnus is a Belgian inspired quadrupel ale. The addition of figs and raisins and an extended aging in Armagnac barrels have yielded a dry and complex treat. On the nose, aromas of raisins, honey and oak dominate. The taste is layered by flavors of fruits, Belgian yeast and caramel. Carolus Magnus is a warm and delicious drink.

In mouth, a nice sweet caramel malt with boozy alcohol warmth, light licorice, treacle, light butterscotch, light bourbon barrel notes, nice and warming. Bottle at Pushkinwows New squirter inauguration.

(Rating #7538)

My Bottom Line:
Dates and floral spiciness suffuse this pimped Quad, as alcohol heat and residual sugars quickly remind you that this is a sipper.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the ruby-laced brown.
-Oxidized notes are already found despite this being under 2 years old.
-Spices and adjuncts work very well with the malt and fermentation characters.
-Carbonation is too low for what I like in the style.

Bottle from the 2015 vintage.

22. Thanks to someone, but I’ve forgotten. Pours an opaque near-black with a thin moussy tan film on top. Nose is boozy, lots of overripe dark pitted tree fruit and heavy whiff of vodka twang, maybe some higher alcohols there. Sticky thick body, minimal carb. Overripe tree fruit throughout the mid palate, tons of barrel and figs and raisins. Bitey vodka twang near the end.

3/16/16. Thanks Lee for sharing at a VORLAUF meeting! This one was one of the talks of the night. So rich, so strong! Dark brown pour with a nice tan head, good lacing. Super rich aroma, booze does show, brandy, dark fruits, figs and raisins for sure, dark toffee, caramel, and the likes. Rich flavor, on the sweet side, loads and loads of dark fruit, toffee, caramel, brandy, booze. Rich, delicious, complex, but definitely a sipper. Yummy.

22 oz bottle shared by b3shine. Pours a hazy amber brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have big caramel, brown sugar, Belgian yeast, dark fruits, raisins, figs, honey, the Armagnac barrel is interesting, dries this out a bit, wood, warming alcohol, sweet caramel finish, subtle spices, nice beer.

22 oz. bottle left behind by b3shine- thanks again, Beau! Pours a hazy amber color with a small off-white head that settles into a bubbly ring. Aroma of vanilla, caramel, fruitcake, brown sugar, wood, honey, raisins, and a warming booze throughout. Flavor follows the same lines, but fruitier and less malty and sugary. The sweetness and booze are by no means less, though. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sweet, fruity, boozy mouthfeel. The fruity booze character leads. Never had this spirit barrel before. Interesting.
