Pours a dark amber with a small white head. No lacing on my clean glass. Smells metallic and malty. A little bit of corn, sugar and cabbage. Same in the taste with a bit more in the malt. Slight bitterness mixed with a nice sweetness in the palate. Not a bad beer. Just expected a lot more for a lager, especially one with such a low abv. Clear chestnut. Wispy white foam. Mellow aroma of pumpernickel bread, toasty malt, unsweetened chocolate, Hallertau (fennel seed), and hints of plummy esters, rock candy and tomato. Firm and loose carbonation. Opens with papery, wafer cookie malt and a faint grip of toast. An encroaching fruity twang induces a slickness which hinders the cleanliness and obscures the vividness of the malt. Subtle saccharine sweetness sits atop a bouncy honeyed-biscuit Munich characteristic. Some juiciness is apparent, though the unripe plum displaces much of the richer textures. Unsweetened chocolate fullness helps with the body, as do some toasty dextrins. Hops are subtle but spicy throughout. Malt is edgeless and well extracted, though, with notable depth and zero huskiness. Finishes quietly but cleanly and balanced, with spicy Hallertau, tobacco and an earthy malt softness prevailing late. Aside from the fruitiness and the tomato note in the aroma, this is a surprisingly clean and quaffable lager that only needs less fruitiness and deeper, more-dynamic malt to augment the relatively thin body. Enjoyable. tmongoose (2504) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - AUG 30, 2013
draft pours dark red nice lacing. nice malt aroma with some sweetness. medium hop base. the flavor is mild for it is a red lager. kind of middle of the road. side note they use this beer to marinate and steep their corned beef in. decent enough if you enjoy lagers. freekyp (2470) - Thomasville, North Carolina, USA - SEP 13, 2008
UPDATED: AUG 16, 2010 Pours a nice reddish amber with a thin weak wispy head. Aroma is subdued, but flavor shows a fantastic caramel note along with a slight nobel hop metallic twang. Nice burnished bronze color. Capped with a small off white head. Well balanced with a just enough hops to keep it interesting. tronraner (2459) - Walland, Tennessee, USA - JAN 22, 2007
Draught. Pours amber with a small off-white head. The aroma is toast, raisin, and sage. The flavor is toasty and hay. Watery and uninteresting.

On draught at the brewery. Pours a nut amber with ring lace. The nose is of caramel and walnuts. Sweet caramel malt with a hint of cherry on the tongue. A well-balanced bitter back finishes the pull. Soft carbonation and a medium body accompany a smooth mouthfeel. Decent. tia (2228) - Sandston, Virginia, USA - APR 14, 2012
Bottle. I’m going to steal my husband’s descriptor and say that it is black tea color plus a big white head. Smells tinny and lemony and grainy. Kind of watery with a little carbonation. Sweet up front, then kind of watery and grainy. Not my thing. ross (2146) - weddington, North Carolina, USA - APR 28, 2004
tastes watered down. red colored pour with creamy head. not bad looking, but not very good tasting. this one lacks when compared to the stick stout and the christmas ale. geologyguy (1687) - Columbia, South Carolina, USA - OCT 13, 2017

A decent lager, but nothing spectacular. Light redish color with a slim head. Malty aroma. Kind of interesting malty taste. Nothing really stood out with this beer. Had this on tap at Barley's in Knoxville, TN.
