appearance: thick near black, with a dense creamy tan head. aroma: assertive nose full of malts--dark chocolate, molasses, caramel; there’s an umami note, along with coffee and some dark fruits. taste: dark chocolate and molasses right up front; soy sauce and coffee next; under that is some deep plummy notes, very subtle; finally a bit of caramel, vanilla, and just a hint of bourbon. finish: smooth, chewy palate; alcohol very well-hidden. notes: Big palate, big flavors, great aroma. Vintage bomber of about three years old at ’t Velootje in Ghent, thanks Lieven. Creamy, dense, pale brownish beige head, thin and dissolving in the middle but retaining around the edge; black robe with chestnut brown edges, only visible for about one millimeter off the edge. Lovely, rich bouquet of hot chocolate sauce, cappuccino, espresso beans, bourbon, vanilla, dry oak, blackberry jam, ruby port, mocha ice cream, hazelnuts, ’blood’ iron, soy sauce, beef stock cubes, madera. Clean, ’dark’ fruity onset, brambleberries, lots of candied date flavors enhanced by the added honey, soy sauce-like umami accent but subtle, soft carbo, thick oily mouthfeel. The mouth cavity is soon lined by lovely nutty and chocolatey ’black’ malt sweetness turning to toasted bitter and eventually roasted coffee, but in a soft and elegant way; long, beautifully bittersweet finish with vanilla-like oak tannins, a peppery hop bitter punch, some light retronasal maderisation and eventually a lot of heating, very explicitly bourbon-like, but not wry alcohol. Pours ultra dark brown, with a nice tan head. Aroma of bourbon, malt and wood. Taste is rich, malty, and tastes of wood aged whiskey. A very nice complex BA imperial stout. Thumbs up!

2013 Bottle. Ar: Deep burnt caramel and dark fruit, raisin and currant; dark fruit, some oxidized caramel malt; a bit of burnt caramel. Ap: Deep black, opaque; small mocha head with a very thin ring of foam. T: Lots of dark fruit, oxidized flavor; toffee and burnt caramel; cherry, currant, a bit of raisin. P: Medium-full body with medium carbonation; finish is medium. O: Nice level of sweetness and body, but the dark fruit flavors are very oxidized; heavy caramel flavor and lack of roast flavor.
