3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Lovely black body and tan head, nice pour. Malty aroma that gets better with warmth. Good malt flavour that is perfectly adequate. Not bad. For a brown.
July 2010. Sampled at the brewery. Amber color with a white head. Caramel, nut, roasted malt and spice aromas. Medium carbonation. Earthy finish with light hops. MisterDenson (78) - Virginia, USA - MAR 24, 2012
3/24/12 first time at Hiram Haines’ Coffee House, Petersburg, VA. Poured into a fluted glassout out of a 22 oz. bottle served cold and drank cool/warm. Tight bubbly 1 inch caramel head with very bubbly lacing. Color was extremely dark brown and a deep amber when held to the light. When cold this beer had a faint aroma and no flavor, once warm it came alive. Malty sweet nutty aroma with a hint of hops and spice. Flavor was medium that of unsweetened sarsaparilla slightly nutty and fruity. Palate high carbonation with a creamy finish. GTAEgeek (2217) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - MAR 13, 2012
22 oz. bottle from Jonathan. Pours dark brown with an amber tint. The head is large, tan, and leaves lots of lacing. The aroma is coffee, milk chocolate, caramel, a little soy sauce, and some mild esters. The flavor is sweet, with a big roasted bitterness/spiciness. The palate is medium, chalky, and a little syrupy. Overall, this is a delicious, great feeling beer. Nicely done. Peregrinari (148) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - NOV 1, 2011
Brown ale thick black color tan tightly bubble head. Aroma is roasted malt with a mild citrus note and coffee. Taste is mildly sour and nutty with some hops and roasted coffee malt on the pallet. Mouthfeel is a little sticky but finish though nutty is dry. Overall a pretty tasty brown. Reminded me more of a porter or a lightly hopped black ipa. The was courtesy of Strykzone. Poured very dark that held up to the light was actually garnet red. Nice sized foamy tan head and a lot of lacing. Nose of we;ll roasted malts with some nuts. Medium body and a very smooth mouthfeel. As it warms it keeps getting better. The flavor is rich and malty with those nuts simply dominating. The finish is bittersweet. Overall this is a far better than average brown ale. Strykzone (7356) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - AUG 15, 2011
Bomber. Dark brown with a lot of red. A tan head lasts nicely. A soggy soft cocoa nose with roasted notes and molasses. The flavor begins as a beer trying to find balance. It see saws from sweetness to tart and bitter and then back to sweet. Tobacco pops up out of nowhere and adds an interesting effect. Nuts and earth do the same. This is definitely not a great beer but it is tasty enough. jgb9348 (6250) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - MAY 1, 2011
Deep rich dark brown coloured body with a large, tan head that fades very quickly. Aroma of roasted malt, metal, cereal, cola and a lot of raisins. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt and nut flavours with a lot of raisins, metal and a touch of coffee thrown in. Aftertaste shows pecans and hazelnuts, a decent amount of grapes and raisins and a lot of bitter malt showing through with a good complexity. Overall, a very nice brown with good nuttiness a pleasant sweetness and a very good complexity. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Opera House Gourmet in Manassas, Virginia on 12-March-2011 sampled at home in Washington in celebration on the murder of Osama Bin Laden on 01-May-2011. In the bomber bottle from the Republic of Floyd. Pours black with a thin beige head. Mighty powerful chocolate aroma. Huge chocolate flavor. Finishes with a rare bit of smokiness. This is really delicious. ilovedarkbeer (2741) - Arlington, Virginia, USA - AUG 8, 2010
Pours a brown / amber color with a small bubbly canvas head. Notes of caramel, biscuits, popcorn, and milk chocolate. Medium weight, burnt sort of grainy finish. meh.
