Bottle. The pour was a murky dark brown with some maroon highlights and an average (1-2 finger) creamy beige head that was mostly lasting and had excellent sheets of sticky lacing.
The aroma was nice and rich with a dark grain malt and a doughy Belgian yeast and possessed notes of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, dark fruit (raisons and dates) and a mild medicinal alcohol scent.
The taste was lightly sweet, rather malty and a tad acidic with hints of dark chocolate and dark fruit from the beginning, but quickly became roasty with a strong yeast presence and a note of roasted coffee and a touch of vanilla towards the finish. The flavor lasted a long good time with a roasty, wheat alcohol taste left to linger on the taste buds.
Mouthfeel was just a hair below medium in body with a semi-dry creamy texture and a moderate carbonation.
Overall a good strong boldly robust brew with tons of flavor, which is quite amazing as it all comes from the grains and yeast (nothing else was added). Basically a simply fantastic beer...
On tap at The Mint in Bethlehem, PA. Opaque dark brown with a brief tan head. Rich chocolate malt nose. Flavor is rich and silky roasted malt, cocoa and dark coffee. 3/15/2017 (shared by yudp): It’s been awhile since I’ve had anything from Ommegang and I’m not sure why since their stuff is always so good, this beer included! Brown-purple color with a large and lasting head; alcohol, dark and dried fruits quickly waft from the glass; so many flavors working together harmoniously to present a really fun dicotomy of flavors, such as: plum and prune, grape and raisin, chocolate and red wine; some caramelized sugar, cherry, earthy and spicy hops, some bread crust/yeastiness, and plenty of warming alcohol; ample carbonation to keep this beer from feeling too heavy on the palatte. 750 ml corked and caged bottle poured into a wide mouth wine glass. The beer is a near black with a khaki head of velvety foam. Great head retention. The aroma has big chocolate and roasty notes and some bitter orange peel. Roasty and somewhat bitter taste. Kind of like a bitter dark chocolate. Big body and moderate carbonation. Velvety mouthfeel.

On tap at the House of Brews. Deep Reddish brown, almost black. Smells of banana, lots of yeast, licorice and dark fruits. Strong roasty aroma. Tastes like lots of bananas. Licorice behind it. Then a heavy roasted malt. The licorice and sweetness comes back in the finish. Medium body. Well carbonated. I expect a lot of Ommegang dark Belgians. Wow, apparently this beer has changed names since I bought it! This is a rating for the original Art of Darkness version. Apparently I followed the advice to age it which I think was a great idea! Initially I was worried about this beer from the aroma which seemed very sweet and strong which usually means heavy and overly alcoholic (I’m thinking along the lines of The Beast from Avery). However, the first sip dispelled this fear as it was sweet but relatively light in body and truly in the Belgian dark ale style. Dark is right as this is nearly opaque but shows a nice ruby color under strong light. Belgian candy sugar is the most prominent flavor here but there’s also a light bittersweet chocolate note that comes through. The alcohol is noticeable but not overwhelming in any way. Finishes sweet and slightly spicy with cinnamon notes. Excellent beer for the style and I’ll have to try the new version to see if it measures up to the original.
