Corked bottle and served in my Expedition snifter: Basically opaque with a slowly fading creamy tan head and left very good lace upon the snifter. The aroma has notes of bittersweet chocolate, walnut, leather, lactic acid, grassy and slight resiny hop, light charred wood and just a dash of espresso.

The taste is a lovely blend of rich cafe mocha and twangy bittering hops. The sweetness of the chocolate is balanced by the coffee and hop bitterness. Adding depth is some smoke, fig and prune. The mouth feel is not as lush as I hoped but then again it is quite drinkable and oh so smooth!

For me this is a well executed brew with just enough sweetness working with lactic and bitterness to make it oh so tasty. I will grab me many more bottles when they arrive in the local area. Thanks to Todd (MrBendo) for my advanced bottle in trade.

On tap at the 2007 GABF: Pours a mostly opaque dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing froth of dark tan head. Aroma of slightly sweet and doughy dark chocolate and biscuity malts. Body starts fairly doughy and semi-sweet with some earthy, almost burnt dark chocolatey notes and a drier toasty finish. Could use a touch more sweetness, but pretty interesting.

Excellent. This is definitely a magnificent stout. The chocolate is huge mixed with just a touch of coffee in the flavor. It is a full bodied, creamy brew with a silky smooth finish.

Excellent Chocolate Stout! Effervescent like a Belgian, strong in flavor like a stout, choclatey like a chocolate stout and not too sweet.

Bottle. Pours a dark chocolatey brown with a decent sized light mocha head. Decent lacing throughout. The aroma is a blend of chocolate, dark roasted malts, cocoa. The taste is chocolate with a light beer aftertaste. It’s a bit watered down for a stout, grabs me more as a porter. The aftertaste is a good bitter chocolate. It’s a very decent beer, but not what I was anticipating.

Happy 10th Anniversary Ommegang! Many more!
From the wired up & corked 750ml bottle this pours a very dark brown body with a modest light brown head that laces spottily. It has an aroma of dark, slightly bitter chocolate, iced coffee, dark roasted malt, and a touch of sour cream. It has a thinner mouthfeel than I would have expected and just makes it into the medium bodied category. The flavor pretty well ecdhoes the aroma except that the malts seem slightly burnt and a dash of earthy bitterness is added. Pretty decent.

Tap @ House of Brews, NYC. Pours a deep brown color with a medium-sized tan head. Aroma is malt, chocolate, coffee, and slightly -detectable hops. Taste is chocolate and malt up front with a slight coffee aftertaste and alcoholic tinge at the end. Slightly metallic as well, but overall a solid effort.

750 ml corked and caged bottle pours an ebony body with an attractive light brown head that leaves some extravagant lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, creamed coffee, and light floral hops. Medium body. Taste is dark chocolate, chocolate milk, and roasty dark malts(some coffee notes) balanced by a pleasantly floral hops bitterness. Finish has a lingering fresh roast coffee aftertaste. A very interesting offering from Ommegang.

UPDATED: JUL 4, 2014 750 mL caged and corked bottle received via trade from Beerlando and again from another 750 mL bottle on 7-4-14. Pours nearly opaque black with an modest, frothy and medium sized bubbles, tan head, somewhat diminishing with good lacing. Aroma is primarily roast malt and dark chocolate with fruity ester notes as the beer warms. There is the slightest hint of earthy hops late and with adequate swirling. Flavor is heavy dark malt, debittered roast and dark chocolate with soft alcohol and fruity esters, light earthy hops emerge after the malt dries out, leaving a light hop bitterness and a dry finish to this otherwise malt focused beer. Full bodied, light alcoholic texture and lively carbonation.
