Interesting. This is basically just Duvel brewed at Ommegang (like they have for years now), but this time done with Ommegang’s house yeast instead of the typical Duvel yeast. Pours the normal Duvel lightly hazy gold with a nice, lasting head. Aroma is light pils malts and a definite fruity yeast note. Flavor is in fact similar to Duvel, with two notable exceptions. First, and less obvious, is that the usual floral hop crispness of Duvel is missing. Second, and most telling, is a clear note of banana ester from the yeast. Different, but yet the same. I love the various takes on Duvel that have come out recently, like this and the Green. Really highlights how minor tweaks can change a beer. Oh yeah, this was pretty good, even thought the banana was a bit stronger than I would have liked. Growler from Whole Foods Short Pump. Cheers to Greg! AKThunder (170) - New York, USA - NOV 30, 2012
This is a very nice Belgian Ale made outside of Belgium. The brewery, Ommegang has done an excellent job, and they are now part of the Duvel family. Very floral grass tasting hops, nice hay malt, and this is enjoyable to drink slowly.
