COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Night gathers and its time to announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones series. Take the Black Stout is named for the oath taken by those who stand the Nights Watch at the Wall, defending Westeros against northern.

Take the Black Stout is a 7% beer, brewed with base, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. Hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spices are licorice root and star anise. Hue is black with full tan head. Aromas include chocolate, caramel, and earthy hops, light roastiness, a touch of fruitiness. Tastes include chocolate, coffee, rich malts, and balanced roastiness. Clean hop bitterness joins with slight woody character and spiciness; the finish offers sweet malt character leading to spicy, earthy, hop bitterness.

Ommegang Game Of Thrones #2 - Take the Black Stout Very dark near black pour over a very foamy and active tan head. Head lasts forever and leaves some very thick lacing. Scent is all malts and earth and chocolate. Very thick mouth. Lots of dark chocolate bitterness and a surprising amount of hops. Much more hops taste than usual in a stout. Im guessing high IBUs here. Theres a tartness as well, licorice like. Its like its trying to be too dark. Trying too hard to have a touch of harshness that I think ruins the balance a bit. For a theme beer I think it does what it is trying to do. The problem is that I think it takes it too far. This would be fantastic if slightly less harsh.

Bottle from back in 2013. Cleaning out the corners of the rot box tonight. Pours opaque black, medium creamy tan head, dissipates with lots of residual and nice lacing. Aroma is roast, hints of smoke, molasses, black licorice. Flavor is light plus sweet, light bitter, roasty, earthy, molasses and anise. Full bodied. I really wanted to hate this as a gimmick beer, but its actually pretty well done.
