COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Night gathers and it’s time to announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones series. Take the Black Stout is named for the oath taken by those who stand the Night’s Watch at the Wall, defending Westeros against northern.

Take the Black Stout is a 7% beer, brewed with base, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. Hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spices are licorice root and star anise. Hue is black with full tan head. Aromas include chocolate, caramel, and earthy hops, light roastiness, a touch of fruitiness. Tastes include chocolate, coffee, rich malts, and balanced roastiness. Clean hop bitterness joins with slight woody character and spiciness; the finish offers sweet malt character leading to spicy, earthy, hop bitterness.

750 ml bottle
I am not into Game of Thrones but something about this release caught my eye. I finally got around to sampling it a few weeks ago. The beer has held up surprisingly well though I would not recommend waiting too much longer. I might even have to spring for one or two more special Ommegang releases in the future.

Aroma / Appearance - Inky black liquid consumes the glass. A sticky leg of dusty colored head crawls downwards. Black coffee, malts, and licorice enrich the air with a clear message - this beer will be an intense stout.

Flavor / Palate - Malt, coffee, and black raspberries slowly unfold on the tip of the tongue. They then blossom into a dense texture with few bells and whistles beyond the flavors you get on the first sip. Even so as long as thi line remains affordable I might grab one from time to time for novelty’s sake.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Lior’s place. Thanks DSG. Opaque black with brown head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, wood, some cherry and licorice, a bit smoked. Sweetish flavor, alcoholic with notes of licorice, anice, wood, bitterish, lots of roastiness, ash. Very carbonated, full-bodied. Very nice.

Bottle, 75cl corked, shared by bergstaden. A dark brown beer with a dense, finger-thick beige head. The aroma has a good dash of licorice, with chocolate, oatmeal, coffee and mocha. It’s full-bodied, smooth and lightly warming, with a nice carbonation level. Roasted malts, prunes and figs, mocha, oatmeal cookies and some licorice in the flavor, followed by a good dash of bitterness. Lasting roasted and pleasantly bittered finish. Nice indeed, but there’s something missing that I can’t pin point. 170311
