Ommegang beers are all spiced, and Hennepin is a good example of spicy saison, but with good malt character to back up the spice character of this beer. The spice notes in this beer is up front, center stage, but Hennepin gains its character from the artful use of malt and hops as well. Iíve enjoyed Hennepin many times, and one of my most memorable examples was trying this beer at the brewery in Cooperstown. This beer pours to a cloudy, pale golden color, with a thick, rocky, white, head, and a lively carbonation. The nose on this beer is excellent, with lots of zesty aromas of pepper, corriander, pale malt, and earthy yeast. The palate is hearty, and firm, with good pale malt flavor, with a nice back drop of pepper, and earthy yeast flavor. Hennepin finishes with more malt and spice flavor up front, then ends with some grassy hop aroma, and some spice flavor that lingers. A very spicy and peppery version of saison. This beer is a wonderful beer to match with a number of dishes. This beer has very good cutting power. It would work well with red meats, game, poultry, strong and sharp cheeses. nick76 (4399) - Tampa, Florida, USA - FEB 11, 2006
The aroma is honey sweet with yeast, pepper, banana, coriander, and surprisingly hemp. Maybe thatís why I think I smell smoke in it. The appearance is a hazy gold with a foamy head. The flavor is sour and sweet with most of the elements from the aroma. The palate is a little on the thin side but overall itís good. I am still waiting for the hemp to kick in however. Wait... ah there it is.. patrick767 (4063) - fort wayne, Indiana, USA - FEB 10, 2006
UPDATED: FEB 27, 2006 750 bottle - Pours up a huge head, nice, slightly hazy straw color. Citrus is apparent in the pleasant aroma and some yeast. The flavor hits with some sweet malts followed quickly by the citrus and subdued spice. Palate is kind of bubbly, not too thin and avoids being too thin. Initially I thought this brew was a bit too sour for my taste, but soon it seemed just right. The finish has some mild bitterness and lingers awhile. This is the second variety of Ommegang ale that Iíve tried, and Iím impressed with their quality Belgian ale at very affordable prices. dkoonce (911) - Peopleís Republic of Athens, Ohio, USA - FEB 5, 2006
Bottle. Foamy white head that fills half the glass. Aroma of hops and wheat. Hazy with a clear wheat flavor. ChillCoat (1029) - Concord, California, USA - FEB 3, 2006
Bottled. 750. Pours a bright yellow color with a big white head and tons of carbonation. Peppery aroma with phenol notes of banana. The cork has a very musty aroma that Iím not finding in the beer itself. Flavors are primarily malt and banana. Thereís also notes of grass, apples and pears. Finishes dry. What can I say, itís simply a great Saison.

Quite enjoyable. asheft (3062) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 31, 2006
Hazy gold with a fizzy white top rededing to a big patch and ring. Aroma full of corriander and sweet malt with lagery, noble hops. Banana notes and not really musty. Flavour is sweet with malt. Tangy alcohol. Hops bitterness with a little cherry and white grape plus banana, corriander. Lasting syrupy sweetness with an unpleasant sour tang. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. This beer needs to be drier, more carbonated, and with a less dense body. stegosaurus (1882) - Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 30, 2006

Thanks to BierBauch for this one. 12 oz bottle: Pours a cloudy orange-gold with a billowing white head that actually sticks around for a while. Aroma is orange citrus, semi-hoppy, similar to a wit in my opinion, with a certain maltyness that I wouldnít expect in a Saison. Taste is fruity with a certain dry bitterness to it, faint hop notes, lemon, spices. Palate is nice and dry with a little alcohol sting that is hardly noticeable. Nice!
