If I were to have chosen a single beer to try while visiting this might have been it. For a lighter sessionable porter it balances flavor and mildness well. Once again this proves that you don’t have to go big (or sour) to create something noteworthy.
Aroma / Appearance - Rusty brown fluid rests idly below an ivory head. Coffee, malt, baker’s chocolate, and a trace of smokiness feel like sitting down to breakfast in a 24 hour diner.
Flavor / Palate - Malt and coffee drive a rough mouthfeel that feels a bit gritty like a bowl of oatmeal. With solid depth the result is a beer that is not forgettable but also not over the top. A full growler and a couple of hours would be the perfect combination for a lazy evening around the house.
On tap. Pours very dark brown to black with a slight off-white head. Has a roasty coffee aroma. Flavor has lots of roasted coffee, anise, and an earthy, nuttiness. Little bit of dark fruit as well. Slightly on the thinner side, but I like this one. strongpieman (1651) - Mount Airy, Maryland, USA - JUL 24, 2011
UPDATED: NOV 27, 2011 Draft. Aroma and appearance had my hopes high for this being a great porter. Palate was a little thin and the taste was too light, not really enough there. Drinkable but not one I would choose from this very good brewer.
11/26/11 Growler: Enjoyed the second time much more. Body was medium, nice taste - mild but flavorful. Very good porter. RoscoeJackson (372) - Michigan, USA - FEB 10, 2011

Poured on tap into a pint glass. Standard dark brown porter color. It looked a bit thin and tastes thin. Also very standard coffee and chocolate taste. It did have a bit of bitter hop kick at the end. Kind of plain but very drinkable.

Served on draft at the Michigan Summer Beerfest, 2010, as part of RBSG festivities. Pours a hazy amber color with a medium creamy head. Good head retention and lacing. Malty and fruity aroma with nutty notes as well as toffee and apple. The taste is caramel, stone fruits, faint nuts and hops. Bitter finish. Medium bodied. kassner (1663) - Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 30, 2010
While the IPA was great the porter is just a little thin, still good but just a little thin, color dark amber and enoigh smoke Silphium (3199) - Traverse City, Michigan, USA - MAR 12, 2010
5th Annual MBG Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Murky dark brown body, thin cream head. Coffee, toasty nose. Dry, slightly tangy body with coffee and roasted malt. Mediocre. JaBier (7973) - Capital City, Ohio, USA - FEB 5, 2010
Sample at OG. Black pour with a thick tan nitro head. Roasted malt and coffee in the aroma with a bit of that undesirable metallic nitro character, but not too much. Roasted malt flavor with a hint of chocolate and a creamy coffee finish that’s a tad thinner than I would have liked. Still a decent brew though, and probably the best they had this evening (no Vanilla Java Porter). punkrkr27 (903) - Berkley, Michigan, USA - JUL 29, 2009
Sampled at the 09 MBG Summerfest. Very dark brown pour with some mahogany highlights and a thin tan head. This had tons of super rich coffee roast with some nice notes of cocoa powder and brown sugar and a bitter coffee finish. The body is creamy and full with soft carbonation.
