COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ritterguts Gose is a top-fermented, sourish and slightly salty-tasting ale that was first brewed in 1824. It is the beer specialty of Leipzig and the oldest still existing Gose brand in the world. Gose is an own, ancient style of beer that does not correspond to the German purity law. Even today, it is still brewed with an admixture of coriander and salt in the traditional way with the special historic Gose yeast in open fermentation. Its particular character our Gose gets thereby and by the additional lactate fermentation.
Brewed by Hartmannsdorf until 2014 (until 2007 @3.9%, then 4.2%), brewed by Reichenbrand in Chemnitz from 2015.
World Beer Awards London: Worlds Best Gose 2013, Europes Best Gose 2014, World Beer Idol 2016: Gose Gold, World Beer Cup 2016: Bronze Medal

pinkish-orangish-amber. White head, fades very quickly to nothing. Smells like a light lager: a slightly tart hay and grass. Body is watery with a touch of syrup, light, semi-fine carbonation with a moderate burn. Flavor is tart lactic and wheat grain. Finish a tartness bordering on reminiscent of pickles. An OK Gose, a bit too tart for me.

4.2% on tap at Luppulo 12. My first German Gose a lovely cloudy honey gold with a foamy white head. A sour salty funky nose. Light bodied but wow what flavor! Salt, yoghurt, tart, lactic, wheat, think an amped up salty sour Yakult. Great. The nose is so so but the taste is phenomenal. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I first tasted this beer 7-8 years ago at the Berlin beer festival. I thought it was a very nice beer and quite enjoyed it. Unfortunately, Ritterguts has changed its contract brewer and the recipe. The beer is quite simply no longer a Gose. It may come close to a Berliner Weie, but it lacks both the salt and coriander that are characteristic of a Gose. The beer is quite drinkable, but it is mis-labelled.

Tasapainoinen maku. Loistava kesjuomaksi, koska on mys mukavan kuiva.

Appearance: deeper gold than I expected, largely clear, short and quickly vanishing near-white head. Aroma: typical gose aroma of green apples, lemon zest, cracked wheat, light white wine vinegar, and coriander--that is to say, very enticing. Taste: again, pretty typical gose characteristics, with maybe a bit more salt than usual. Finish: pleasant rush of activated glands at the jawline, lingering lacto tartness over some salt and crackers. Notes: Perfect example of one of my new favorite styles. Where have you been all my life? Bottle from Knightly Spirits, Orlando, Florida.

Clear, hazy hay color. Minimal soapy head. Nose has wheaty gains, coriander, roses, a hint of orange, slight banana, a bit metallic. Slightly tart, dryish grainy flavor, light saltiness. Dry wheat aftertaste with some lactic acid tartness and perryish notes. Light and refreshing texture, medium carbonation.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, white, mostly/fully diminishing. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of lemon juice, sour apple skin, coriander. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively/fizzy carbonation. Pleasant and simple.

500 ml bottle. Absolutely classic and hard to fault. No head, clear orange/gold. Aroma is lacto tang, sea water, touch of spice. Taste has a smooth tartness with very pleasant lacto characteristics -- very clean and delicious. Perfect amount of sour and salt. Yum!
