This tastes a lot like a cheapo Euro lager so I like it. It is a mild pilsner-ish brew with some actual malt character and a touch of herbal, floral hops. It’s maybe a hair sweet and thick for my taste but does have a pleasantly potent smack of bitterness in the finish. I’d put this a cut above most Japanese lagers at least in terms of being flavorful.

Intriguing can. It is a spring brew and very light and refreshing. Pours a nice gold colour and has a frothy head. Some lacing on the glass which is unusual for a Japanese lager. Nose reveals light grain and a touch of rice. Mouthfeel is a little oily. Taste wise it is crisp, clean and thirst quenching. A typical Jap lager. I get grain, rice and maybe a little lemon. Solid beer when it is starting to get hotter outside. Orion very rarely disappoints but also rarely blows me away.

Springtime with Orion, this one smells a bit plastic but the flavor is nice. Picking up a little spicy kick in there.

Draft after the brewery tour: Poured golden color with white head. Metallic aroma. Watery malt, not very impressive.

35cl can from a market in Causeway Bay Hong Kong, nice design, 5%. Clear light gold, short white head. Nothing particular on the nose. Aroma is slightly malty with a focus on hops, flowery hops, straw, hints of honey. Taste is fairly bitter, finish is dry, crisp. Tastes like a pilsener.

Clear golden coloured body with a very thin white head, only about a centimetre tall, but pure white. Aroma of rice, alcohol, malt and not much else - fairly mild. Light-bodied; Strong rice and light grain flavours with hints of lemons and alcohol, but very light and showing no assertive aftertaste or funk at all. Aftertaste shows only a handful of rice and lemon characteristics with nothing else bad. Overall, a surprisingly decent lager with some lighter notes for beating this heat and some subdued lemon flavours for the refreshing qualities. I sampled this 33 cL can purchased from City’Super! in Harbour City, Kowloon, Hong Kong on 04-July-2014 for HK$15,00 sampled a bit later in my hotel room here in Wan Chai, Hong Kong on 04-July-2014.

Can from the local Lawson. Served in a pilsner glass. A clear deep gold with a thick fizzy/fluffy head. Big yeasty/grainy aroma with grassy notes. Slick oily medium bodied, sugary sweet grainy flavor with very light spicy hop notes in the finish. Ok but fairly average.

Smelly toilet nose. Sakura, sweet malt, grass, mild bitter finish. Hmm I get the sakura twist but still pretty much a sub-average lager...

330 ml can bought at CitySuper in New Town Plaza, Shatin. Clear golden orange colour; Half finger head and white foam which last for about 40 seconds; Small and sticky lacing and very fizzy carbonation. Strong aroma of malt, bread and grass; Very light sweet and pleasant taste of malt, bread, faint citrus and light grassy hops; Mid to full body, oily palate; Taste profile is nice sweet bready malt and light grass throughout, with hidden hoppiness - again low and pleasant - shows up nicely as a finish. Slightly dry after taste, very easy to mouth.

Comments: I’ve been using “pleasant” repeatedly to describe this one and it shows. Unlike most overtly sweet Asian macro lagers, its malt’s sugar sweetness is very low, a good sign of a well-attenuated beer. Its hoppiness is stronger in grass than bitter, which I like. All in all it tastes like a good Helles, which is a rarity among Japanese / Asian macros. Recommended.
