Nose is mellow and rounded, with some malty notes, and quite sweet & fruity. Palate is mid bodied, malty, moderately bitter. A decent drop biirusaikou (2705) - - MAR 3, 2016
Discounted bottle from Seijo. Rich raisin, cherry, licorice. Dark fruit and berries, cocoa, notes of candy, hints of milk, dry finish. Not so exciting but fairly quaffable overall. cervmagpt (809) - PORTUGAL - FEB 25, 2016
Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 14C). Bottle 50 cl - Batch L4195. AROMA: roasted aroma with a moderate.high almost burnt note. slight dark caramel on the background. Some roasted black coffee aroma is present. APPEARANCE: dark brown color and translucent with ruby body against light. medium-low light-brown creamy head with medium-low retention. TASTE: similar to aroma but with less intensity roasted-slightly burnt malt flavor, with a mild sweet background remembering dark coffee. very faint dark caramel. low bitterness with an almost dry finish and moderate roastiness. balance towards roasted malt. PALATE: medium to medium-low body with a slight texture. medium-low carbonation. no harshness from roasted grains. OVERALL: a scottish export with nice aromas and flavors but with a bit too much smoky phenolic character. Evilkniamhel (941) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - FEB 18, 2016
From bottle. Pours very dark black with a hint of red and a light brown, creamy head. Smells of fruit cake, coffee grind, cherries and chocolate. Taste is malty with a resiny sweetness, and full-bodied. mkel07 (5829) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - FEB 5, 2016
Bottle from Queens Plaza Wine & Beer 050216. This is a really good beer with a lot of stout like characteristics. Pours black with a tan head and has a flavour that is strong and robust. Possibly my favourite Orkney beer.

Aroma: dark, toasted malts, chocolate, light coffee, caramel, cacao. Appearance: black, medium, frothy, beige head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: light bitters continue, dark, roasted malts again, lightly acidic, at best medium bodied, some chocolate and some smoke flavours. Overall: very nice Old Ale, great malty aroma and palate. Mahogany pour with little to no head/retention. Very nice color though. Aroma is just incredible... chocolate-covered cherries. Flavor is malty with some roasted character, but slightly watery. Finish is slightly dry, mostly roast. Not as great as the nose would indicate. rouhlas (3584) - GREECE - NOV 8, 2015
500ml bottle at the Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki, courtesy of Constantin. Black color with beige head. Malty aroma, fruity, pear, smoked notes, licorice, light chocolate. Sweet and light bitter taste like aroma. Light to medium oily body with soft carbonation. King_Alex_II (1228) - SWITZERLAND - NOV 2, 2015
Black color with beige foam. The smell reminds of fruits (dates). The taste is smooth, clear, a little roasty and a tiny bit fruity. Solid aftertaste.
