"The nose on this beer is ripe and fruity with slightly vinous esters, married to interesting hop notes - the colour of a glorious red ruby wine."

Black with a brown head. Not much aroma. Not much flavor initially but flavor lingers on the tongue after swallow and is pretty good.

Pours black with beige head. Aroma is dry coffee. Taste is dry roast barley with slight acidity. Thin body. I preferred this to Dark Island Reserve, but both have a n unusual acidity, although this is no where near as pronounced and alot more palatable

Very dark brown, with a small white head. Aroma of sweet malts and ripe fruits. Slick mouthfeel, with caramel, roasted malts, ripe fruits and molasses. Medium bodied ale, easy to drink. Quite nice.

Bottle from Asda. A very dark tasting, smokey finished beer. Surprisingly light.

Bottle 0,5. Dark, almost black, small head. Aroma: roasted, caramel, toffee, hops. Taste: moderately roasted, toffee, coffee, chocolate. Good. Seems a bit more like stout than old ale.

Bottle. Very dark brown, almost black, in colour. Very dark chocolatey with some coffee. Roast Malty: lots of chocolate, coffee, roast malts, toffee, caramel. Fruity; dark fruits, dates?, figs?, berries. Roast bitter-sweet fruity with a slightly sour edge. Nice malt/hop balance. Dry bitter roast & chocolatey finish. Very drinkable. Nice beer! (2010-05)

500ml bottle @ Matts. Pours a deep dark brown with a thin head. Nose has a rich and robust porter character. Flavour is lightly roasted malt, semi-sweet dark chocolate and some dark fruit. Not bad.

500mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small white head. Aroma brings out dry dark fruits, toffee, bready malt, and brown sugar. Flavour is dry and bready, with toffee bready malt, dry dark fruits, and light brown sugar. For a 4.6% beer, this is surprisingly flavourful. Well-constructed and thorough for the style. Very good.

Tasting at Matts
Dark brown color. Strange smell, treacle, apple, freshly cut wood, raisins, smoke; not elegant, but a lot going on. Weak body, some caramel flavor, hint of treacle, but no depth; some astringency in the final, and cardboard.
Weird.

Pours deep black with a white head. Nose roasted malt. Tastes roasted malt, dark chocolate. There is an almost sour fruity taste that puts me a bit off.

Pours like a porter. Nose is roasted malt, bitter coffee, dark chocolate and some dark fruit ( cherries, blackberries ). Nice silky mouth feel. Taste is similar to nose, nicely bitter on the back end and slightly juicy. Fantastic. Very sessionable too.
