"Named after Thorfin Hausakliuuf, the seventh earl of Orkney, this reddish coloured ale has an intense vinous nose, is rich and satiny in the mouth with a long dry finish and deep rich fruity notes. Described as ’Satiny smooth in the mouth, deceptively light and dangerously drinkable’."

HomeBrewHawk (464) - De Soto, Kansas, USA - JUN 3, 2008
11.2oz. bottle served in a Duvel glass. Poured a dark copper/brown with a little more than a finger of off white head. Rich malty aroma with caramelized sugar, toffee, and fruit. Full bodied with lots of malt. Molasses sweetness. There are some hops in the middle to balance the sweetness. Nice scotch ale.

Bottle. Pours opaque medium-brown with light tan head that dissipates quickly. Plum and white raisin aroma. Raisin with some fig and plum notes with some mild alcohol warmth in the finish. Lighter body than expected.

A very solid Scotch. A little sweet, very malty with some nice dark fruit finish. Pours darker than expected.

Kleg (229) - The Beach, Florida, USA - JUN 11, 2017
Clear rust colored pour with a thick beige head and great retention. Decent lacing. Scotch nose. Heavy mouthfeel. Very strong scotch flavor with dark fruit notes. 8.5 ABV is obvious. Semi harsh. Too strong for me.

Could ramble on about this beer, but i’ll just say it’s a Meat and potatoes beer.

4.2
MNAle (184) - Minnesota, USA - APR 28, 2017
Dark ruby with a tan to off-white thick head, leaving nice lacing. Georgeous aroma of cherry, caramel, nutty, and more, with some alcohol in there, too. Moderate feel. Complex flavor, fruits - cherry, raisens - caramel, earthy and sweet, alcohol is obvious but not overpowering in the taste. The finish has fruits, malts, alcohol, and some bittering. The taste is very nice and complex - there is a lot going on here that is difficult for me to describe it all, but the combination is a really good Scotch ale.

3.5
PanMarek (425) - Pennsylvania, USA - APR 22, 2017
Clear, deep reddish brown pour with moderate beige head that lasts along the side of the glass. Caramel malt is dominant in the nose but there are notes of dried fruit and alcohol. Medium body and fizz with a slightly dry finish. The sweet roasted malts at the beginning fades a little toward the end, preventing the beer from being too sweet.

Dark amber/cider color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted sweet malt, rich fruit, & caramel; Flavor of smoky sweet malt, spicy hops, fruit, caramel, and molasses; Finish is dry; Pretty good - very drinkable.

Jabic (565) - Plainfield, Vermont, USA - MAR 20, 2017
Ar: Deep, sweet maltiness; caramel and toffee; raisins, dried cherries, some butterscotch; a bit of alcohol. Ap: Deep amber mahogany; clear; medium tan head with moderate retention, leaves a bit of sticky lacing on the sides of the glass, an uneven ring of medium bubbles, and a very thin cap of fine bubbles; T: Deep, rich maltiness with medium and dark caramel; a bit of acrid malt and tannin, very low bitterness; moderate sweetness up front, but dries up quickly; rich malt throughout, marked fulness of malty flavor, with a lingering, sharp but low bitterness. P: Medium-full body with medium-high carbonation; finish is medium-dry. O: A classic wee heavy; full in the malt flavor and mouthfeel departments, with great specialty malt complexity--some roasted notes, a range of caramel notes, and lots of great base malt richness.

3.2
GoufCustom (1980) - HONG KONG - MAR 19, 2017

330 ml bottle bought at HK Brewcraft in Central.

Looks: Cloudy hazy burgundy red colour with a thin ring of dirt-like yeast sedimentsNear zero head with residual soapy white foam which fades in 15 seconds; Good sticky lacing with zero carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant and sweet rich amber malt, with strong Brandy, strong caramel, toffee, figs, dark fruits, strong brown sugar, strong spices , dough, yeast and light grass.

Taste: Close to medium sweet Amber malt, with strong caramel, toffee, light toast, light dark fruits, light floral, fair molasses, spice, dry biscuits, yeast, light lemon, fair to light bitter hops and thin grass.

Body: Medium body. Slick and quite oily palate.

Mouth Feel: Strong amber maltyness in a thick background. Dry biscuity throughout. Booze is omnipresent but much less liquor-ish than the aroma suggest. Light dark fruits with caramel and toffee. Surprisingly moderate sweetness. Spicy and light lemon to round. Quite nice!

Hoppiness: Strong spices and light grass in nose. Light floral, spice, light lemon and thin grass in taste; Bitterness is low for a n abrupt, low astringent biscuity malty finish.

After Taste: Dry. Spicy boozy and light bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one’s nose is intimidating with liquorish Brandy which suggest strong Belgian Ambrée, but the taste is pretty timid, doughy dry maltyness with minimalistic dark fruits and strong spices. Easy to drink for sure but a bit hollow for the style. Still worth trying.
