"Named after Thorfin Hausakliuuf, the seventh earl of Orkney, this reddish coloured ale has an intense vinous nose, is rich and satiny in the mouth with a long dry finish and deep rich fruity notes. Described as Satiny smooth in the mouth, deceptively light and dangerously drinkable."

One of my bigger disappointments of late, that being said it still was a decent beer. This beer poured nice and I thought, based off the nose, it would be a real winner.Unfortunately in my mind/mouth it is just above average. This beer starts malty and has a backbone of hops, but no complexity to it. It has no glaring faults but no amazing features either. As a wee heavy it is too simple and lacks a real depth or mouthfeel.

Bottle. Dark Reddish-Brown in colour. Very Malty; sweet toasted malts, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, hint of chocolate? Very Fruity; raisins, dark fruits, dates & figs. Hoppy; spicy peppery hops. Smoky, peaty notes. Viscous, syrupy. Warming alcohol noticeable near the finish. Fairly sweet (but not too sweet) fruity malty throughout. Dry finish. Liked this. Nice beer! (2009-04)

This pours brown, small head of foam. Smells of maple, caramel malt, fruity, nutty. Tastes of maple and caramel, nutty, toffee, slight cardboard. Low end of medium bodied. A classic and still holds up.

330ml bottle into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 7th Jan 2017. Deep mahogany reddy/brown, beige head, thin but full. Semi-sour, vinous like aroma and initial taste, hedgerow berry flavours arrive mid-sip and equal out the mild sour tastes somewhat. Malty notes also appear late on as the beer warmed in the glass. Decent and interesting, needs to be drank slowly and savoured to fully appreciate its depth and character.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy ruby chestnut, with a moderate off-white head, which lasts well and leaves decent lacing. Stewed fruits, port and an interesting maritime tang make up the aroma. Light herbal hops up front give way to stewed fruits and sweet sherry in the mid-palate. Theres a savoury, almost seaweed flavour to the finish. An interesting Scotch ale. Quite dry for the style.

Pours ruby with amber shades and a tan head. Aroma of deep caramel malts, toffee, dark fruits, caramelized sugar and some hops. The flavour is again full of caramel malts, toffee, molasses, dark fruits, brown sugar, some toasty notes as well and a medium hoppy finish. Full body, low carbonation, sticky mouthfeel. Very strong and powerful in character. The best interpretation of a scottish beer so far.

330ml bottle. Pours an average size foamy head and goes away pretty quick. Has an ambercopper appearance and has pretty good lacing. Faint aromas, mainly toasty and nutty malts, with a herbal hop type scent. Flavours of spice and resin hops, raisins, other dry fruits and mild spices. Pretty good balance between sweet and bitter. Prickly and tanigling sensation. Medium carbonation. Very mild bitterness in the finish. Pretty good stuff.

Color is nearly identical to Wild Turkey Bourbon. A bit darker. Deep red- Brown with amber overtones. 1/4 inch of tannish foam. Nose, malty not particularly aromatic. Some molasses, forest floor, Autumn rain, light notes of Carmel. Taste, fruitcake, Guinness stout, salty nutty Carmel, malty bitter-sweet finish. Full flavor but balanced, not to thick. Ok this is a good Scottish Ale, but this fucker really comes alive when paired with a strong single malt whisky. When this ale supports Laphroaig 10 year its all over. The malt profiles match wonderfully. The Laphroaig becomes more focused and heightened. The Ale becomes more well rounded and less sweet in its forward flavors. But the magic is the finish. The peat of the scotch mixes with the ale and lingers in a perfect harmonious poetry. Bonner City !
