In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.
Bottled at 5.2% abv - can go up as high as 7.2%

Pours a reddish brown with a massive pillow of head that never goes away. Smell is typical Trappist with a lot of spice and malt character. Flavor is surprisingly bland. Carbonated mouthfeel. Good

Bottle at BeerDock Leek. Pours a slightly hazy orange colour with a thick white head. Aroma of green apple, yeast, some sourness, slight funk, a little barley sugar and subtle spice. Taste of straw, barnyard, yeast, some funk, slight barley sugar, a hint of green apple and subtle spice. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A dry, slightly funky, spicy bitterness in the finish. A quintessential Belgian Trappist ale. Made with wild yeasts which I can get in the aroma and the initial flavour. Great.

Anno 2016. Colore giallo arancio, schiuma media persistente, elevata carbonazione, bolle piccole e medie. Sentori caramella, pelle di salame, aciditá evidente. Al palato malto, vaniglia, note fruttate. Corpo medio leggero, delicata sechezza, retrogusto leggermente amaro. Una birra particolare nel panorama trappista caratterizzata da un accenno di aciditá e da una amabile secchezza , da decifrare ma comunque interessante.

For me, Orval is the best beer in the world (at least of all the many beers I have tasted). It is so unique amongst the Trappist beers. The bottle itself is a piece of art. It is not too strong, very tasty, perfectly bitter. Just impeccable. You can drink it room temperature (recommended) or cold. Excellent all year round, mid-day, afternoon, or evening. Best to drink Orval in its glass.

En belgisk ale fra den absolut øverste hylde. Dejlig frisk øl, med tilpas bitterhed og fylde.

UPDATED: JUL 9, 2017 Bottled on 17/09/2014 which is almost 3years. 33l bottle in Herbeaumont Belgium. Poured a dark golden to copper beer. Offwhite frothy head which sticked to the glass. Nose is yeasty with hints of apple. Taste is sweet candy sugar and barley. Can also taste banana and rum? Alcohol is very present, though it is only 6.2% vol.

Bottle dated 17/07/2014. Pours a copper-brown with a very foamy white head. Aroma is funk, barnyard notes, and spicy yeast. Flavor is similar, a little earthy. Has lots of carbonation and a crisp body. Very good.

rollinsr (745) - Atlanta, GEORGIA - JUN 28, 2017
