3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 2, 2011 Bottle. Poured a murky amber with some orange undertones and a huge white foamy head that was mostly diminishing but had fantastic lacing.
The aroma was heavy of a straw like malt, a moderate floral hop and a moldy scented yeast with notes of dried fruit (raisins), a hint of spice and some citrus (lemon and maybe orange) with a mild alcohol tinge.
It tasted a malty, a little bitter and slightly sour with a hint of a peppery spice in the beginning and finished lightly bitter and yeasty with notes of fruit, citrus and a slight alcohol tinge at the end. The flavor was left to linger for a while, leaving a light sourness on the palate.
Mouthfeel was light to medium in body and a little oily in texture with the carbonation being quite pronounced, almost prickly in feel.
Overall a fantastic Trappist Ale, I can see now why the Monks only brew this one beer.
From bottle in Belgian ale glass. Pours slightly murky apricot orange with billowing head that settled fairly quickly. Aroma is bready and earthy, there are tart notes in the taste that lend to the dry finish tomandoaltura (346) - - NOV 21, 2017

Its a good beer , but considered its breeding as a Belgian Trappist beer its only pretty average good. AaronIPAAPA (291) - Warsaw, POLAND - NOV 18, 2017
warka z 09.11.16.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2017 Bottle 330 ml. White foam, orange color, a bit sour with apple and citrus flavor, bitter aftertaste, one of the best I’ve ever had. Truly a masterpiece! samsomuk (210) - Bridgwater, Somerset, ENGLAND - NOV 13, 2017
UPDATED: NOV 13, 2017 Bottled 27/04/2016. Pours clear orange amber with a large, loose frothy white head. The aroma has farmyard funk, it’s fruity, malty, spicy, yeasty, light hops. The taste is wonderfully complex - fruity, malty, yeasty, spicy, bready, light grassiness. Medium bodied, generous frothy carb. Dry, funky, fruity finish. Rightly a classic. It’s not a beer I’ve always enjoyed but I’m definitely growing to appreciate its wonderful nuances now. Tide (4375) - Helsinki, FINLAND - NOV 11, 2017

A weird one. As per the commercial description "In contrast to all others....". I guess you love it or you're flummoxed. I never thought I'd say this about a beer but there's a distinct hint of thai fish sauce in the aroma! The fish on the bottle was a warning. Apparently it pays homage to the legend of Orval. Let's face it, the taste does too.
