COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
New York City-based rock act Bayside is collaborating with Oskar Blues to release Bayside Black IPA, to be released August 19. According to the wonderfully named Juice Drapeau, head brewer at Oskar Blues Brewery in Lyons, “The challenges of creating a Black IPA is that when creating a recipe one has to be very careful to balance the hop bitterness and malt bitterness. Dark malts can have astringent characteristics to them so the key is to really achieve a clean hop bitterness to compliment the potential malt bitterness. Also, another important aspect of Black IPA’s is to layer a variety of crystal malts and dark malts so that the malt character in the beer has lots of depth and complexity.”

Pours opaque dark chocolate brown with a thick and persistent tan head. Aroma delivers tempting roast malt, woody hop and molasses tones. Flavor drags evergreen hops, roasted malt, smoky, molasses, and subtle citrus notes across the tongue. This is my favorite beer style, and this is a good one. Firm body features lively fizz and a hoppy, smoky finish. Get to the bayside!

Deep heavy brown, basically black, with a thin foamy beige head. Big earthy sweet resiny dank hop nose that’s full of orange zest, floral hops and a sticky black malt sweetness. Smooth flavor profile that’s gently roasty and black malty with a good balance of floral and orange zesty hops. Really smooth and surprisingly balanced. Lovely floral earthy and fresh hop flavors without a lot of bitterness and no acrid tones from the black malt.

Can from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with a near tan head. Aroma seems citrus over dark malt. Med + body (lots of carbonation). Flavor is less than dry; dark malt; citrus and/or pine hop. This seems much smoother than many of the style. It is fairly/moderately/quite ? bitter. Hard to decide. It’s really good stuff. And black IPAs aren’t one of my favorite styles. This might change that.

12oz can pours with a dark mahogany colored body that supports a tall tan head. The aroma offers up lightly dark roasted malts, a flash of sweet malts and then some spicy and earthy hops. The taste delivers dark roasted malts, bitter chocolate, earthy bitter hoppiness, and then a mild sweet maltiness. Another sip brings about bitter black licorice and dark roasted coffee. Pretty nice but comes across roasty and bitter but actually lacking some in hops.

Pours clear dark brown color with tan head. Aromas of roasted malt and pine. Roasty and piney flavors with a hint of citrus. Medium body with average carbonation and a slightly creamy mouthfeel.
