COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our ’Velvet M-80’ is a hefty, dry hopped double-red ipa with a nose full of aroma, a sticky mouthfeel, a malty middle and unctuous hop flavors. G’Knight sports a surprisingly sensuous finish for a beer of its size (8.7% ABV, 60 IBUs). It’s brewed in tribute to a fellow Colorado craft beer pioneer and Vietnam vet who died fighting a 2002 wild fire outside of our Lyons hometown. På keg på RØØR, Oslo. Klar rødt/brun. Lukter av søt malt, kjeks, sterk hopp karakter. Smaker av sammen, med en tørr ettersmak.

Can from Speciaalbierpakket, not as fresh as I'd like. Aroma is firm biscuity malt, caramel, resinous hops, grapefruit, ripe-ish fruits, orange, and plenty of pine resin. Flavour is medium sweet and above moderate bitter. Body is above medium, bit sticky. Very resinous and malty with definitely some fruity hops as well, I'd like to try this again fresh from draft at the brewery one day.

This would be the perfect example of what a Red IPA should be, IMO. A caramel malt character that sets the tone, with more subtle aromas of ripe fruit, weaker some minutes after pouring. Not too strong, but quite persistent. Everlasting beige head, clear reddish brown colour, no deposits. The taste is no joke for sure, quite intense. More sweet than bitter, and definitely thicker texture than I was expecting. Unspectacular, but really f-ing good.

From Feb 2006

Poured from can a clear dark amber with a large head of foam that dissipated slowly.

The smell is all hops and it's bold as all outdoors.

The taste was more balanced than the smell insinuated. Yes, there's plenty of hop flavour but the malt is definitely there easing the bitterness to "non hop-head loving" levels making this DIPA one smoooth son of a gun and...the +9%abv is *very* well hidden.
Kudos to Oskar Blues!!

Bottom line: A double ipa that brings the hops but also kicks in with a huge malt backing...this is *great* stuff!!

Tasting glass draft @ Billie’s Bier Kafétaria. Hazy darker orange, creamy off-white head. Nose is classical USA pine, moderate, hot very heavy with pine resin syrup, low floral, grapefruit peel, bitter but not extremely with some malt base goop. Taste is bitter basic, not too heavily so dry orange peel, pine resin & leaves, low flower, softer carbonation solid malt body lingering pine, floral, dark, low caramel malt. Balanced but likely only from a modern perspective classical pine resin & floral malty DIPA. Good classical stuff, does the trick. It is clear why this has enjoyed longevity and success. Enjoyed it greatly more than their regular IPA or Pine Throwback IPA.

Taste is nice, balanced between malty sweetness and citrus hoppiness. Biscuits, floral perfume, caramel, dried apricots. Taste is nice, some heat from the alcohol and some malty sweetness. Caramel, bread, ripe fruit jam, grapefruit and pine. Nice and hearty.

355ml can from Beervana. Pours a hazy red-copper color with a small off-white head that diminishes quickly but laces well. Aroma is strongly hoppy and fruity with notes of orange, grapefruit, pamplemuse, pommegranate, peaches and apple purée. Light pungent, piney hints can be felt in the back. Taste is intensely sweet with tight bitter edges. Strong fruity flavors shine with grapefruit, peach, dried apricots, a tad of caramel. Piney, minty bitterness. A bit sugary. Really nice. Medium to big body, quite sticky. Medium carbonation, maybe a bit excessive. Long, strong finish that produces an intense aftertaste. A really good strong red ale.
