2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: DEC 14, 2008 Pours a nice dark brownish black with darker head. Light smokey peat and toffee aroma. Flavor starts off well enough, but fades quickly, too quickly to a watery finish.
Per my Father: "It has a finish reminiscent of that first step into a warm, steaming barn in Winter."
Draft. Pours black. Peat aroma. Rich peaty malt with bready malt following. Rich flavor but very drinkable.

[Tap] This beer is no longer retired. These notes are from 12/1/2014, but it still can be found in some places. Nitro pour. Black in color with a nice nitro head. Aromas of roasted malts and light smoke. Flavors of cream, smoked malts, peat, patent malts, bitter chocolate and some dry earthy hops. Rather thin. Despite the nitro I am getting a grainy astringent character here. akoeninger (769) - Wisconsin, USA - NOV 2, 2014
Great dark ale, rich earthy aroma with hint of peat and sweet malt. Taste is also sweet and malty, slight smokiness. The malt flavors are really good here. And it is not very heavy in body making it drinkable with a faint lingering roasted malt taste. I was impressed by this, like a burly scotch ale. I would say that more emphasis on the smoky peat could really move this into the inventive category.

Rich Black color. Nice earthy aroma. Rich dark ale taste, mixed in with a lot of malt. We also have a smokey peat taste like a great scotch. Only negative was it was a little watery. crossovert (13724) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 16, 2013

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a touch of tan head. Darker malt oak and peat aromas. Woody favors with some darker malt tones. lithy (2996) - Capital of Appalachia, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 25, 2011
Dark brown-black, quick dissipating tan cover. Aroma is light peat reek, caramel, bready malt, chocolate. Taste is stronger peat, some chocolate, toffee, caramel, a bit thin. drpimento (3725) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 23, 2011
I let it warm a tiny bit before trying. Poured with an average light tan head that quickly subsided to a very thin cover, ring, and a tiny bit of lace. Color is hazy/cloudy brown amber. Aroma is malt, toffee, roast, caramel. Flavor is similar, plus has the carbonic tang, a little peat, and not much sweet also has a shade of sour that makes me think it’s turning.. Body is perhaps a bit thin and carbonation a bit forced. Finish is like flavor and of average length. Tmoney99 (14845) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 28, 2011
Draft. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Solid smooth malty aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy balanced bittersweet flavor with a medium smooth bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid brew.

Very dark brown with some visible sediment. Aroma has malt, some red wine, red meat and a little smoke. Flavor is sweet, lightly smoked, and a very light tart flavor. Good.
