12 ounce bottle from Badger Spirits in Beloit, WI, served at cellar temp from a Fitger’s pint glass. I’ve already had more than enough this evening - too much for any night but Saturday - but I can’t finish without trying another O’So, since the last one was so AMAZING...here goes nothing: like the majestic and incredible Hop Whoopin’ IPA I had earlier, this pours out a huge and quite stable head (light tan in this case) that dissipates very slowly, with this beer topping a dark translucent walnut body...nose of roasted pecans, a hint of crème brulee and chocolate, loads of toasty malts, little sweetness, very impressive though it could be a bit stronger...on the tongue, just as with the IPA an exquisite initial sweetness (in this case candy-like as opposed to fruity - but again very real and with no hint of adjuncts or anything artificial) leads eventually through very bitter chocolate and light port wine characteristics to a fairly dry, herb-enhanced, long and powerful finish. Malts are throughout dominant, minimal hop appearance, and a near-perfect balance between toasty bitterness and a brown sugared-sweetness. As with the IPA the mouthfeel is exceptional, and this is a rare porter that I’ve had in recent years that doesn’t have even a hint of anything cardboard or stale in the body. Before tonight I’d just had their mediocre golden ale and figured they might be just another also-ran that saved their best work for the 750s of sour ales; now I’m starting to wonder if I’ve found a new brewery to add to my mental favorites list. Go’so!
