Internationally recognised beer writer Melissa Cole visited us last month to brew an exciting new speciality beer with Matthew Otley. The beer a 4.6% abv golden speciality ale was officially launched on Friday 11th June at the GWBCF in Cardiff International Arena. Melissa named the beer at the unveiling as Thai Bo, a respectful nod to its influences that inspired it.
Infused with Lemongrass, lime leaf and galangal it has been described as having the aromas of a Thai green curry in a glass. The flavours make this an ideal summer beer as the clean refreshing flavours cut right through to quench your thirst and tickle your palette, it has been a big hit also with female drinkers as they describe it as being a beer that they like to drink. We think this beer will be making a return soon as a new monthly seasonal, but if you fancy giving it a try, hurry, we have a limited amount of casks available from this single brew, so call us to secure one of the most striking beers to come out of our brewery this year.

Cask at The Blackwell Inn, Carlton-on-Cleveland, September 2013. Clear to hazy gold with white head. Peanut butter and honey and lemongrass aroma, spicy bitterness and lemongrass taste. Light body, oily, long, fresh, herbal finish.

Hand pulled at the Wellington, Birmingham. Cloudy wheat beer appearance, with nice pale froth. Smooth and chalky in the mouth with an interesting array of flavours: lemongrass, some coconut, herbs. Really unusual, but it works for me. Really good.

Light and crisp. Light soapy foam. Almost no aroma with the exception of a slight bit of pine. Taste is of orange, veggies, citrus, and soap. Really a unique flavor. Not bad despite the soapiness. Some floral effervescence. Tried at the Sheeps Heid Inn outside Edinburgh in 2012.

On cask at The Haymarket. Pours a blonde colour with a fair white head. A spicy aroma of ginger, lemon grass and a little birds eye chilli. Similar flavours with a fair ginger bite. Mild carbonation and a foamy mouth-feel. OK with some lingering chilli heat.

Cask in Dog & Duck. Colour is pale yellow. Nose is coriander, lemongrass, bit of curry, touch of meatiness. Taste is a light beer, but with lemongrass, coriander and curry notes. Hints of green curry. Not really working for me but interesting.

Cask at the Market Porter, 18th November 2011. Nice refreshing ale, interesting lemon grass flavour. Liked it as a one pint, good clean beer

Cask, Philarmonic, Liverpool. Diddley ? Selecta ? Pallid gold with a meek white head. Citrusy nose. Similar flavour with spice and lemongrass notes leading to some hop bitterness towards the finish. Seemed a bit thin overall. Unusual though, and top marks for trying to be different and all that but not really feeling this.

Cask (gravity) - The Bree Louise, Euston, London. Small & fading creamy white head on a clear golden yellow body. An earthy, lightly spicy gingery aroma at the fore. Quite a heady herbal & gingery citrus flavour profile with an OK pithy lemon bitterness in the finish. Light to medium body, soft & smooth mouthfeel, light & short finish. A quaffable & not overpowering ginger presence throughout but not generally of a style that scores big for me.

[cask at the Haymarket Bar, Edinburgh] Clear greenish gold pour, which may have been the power of suggestion given the Thai green curry but it did have a greenish hue. Aroma of lemongrass, thyme and other herbal sweetness. The flavour is pretty much vegetal more lemongrass, leading to a pretty big grassy ginger bitterness. Certainly tastes a bit like a green curry. Odd one of those beers you spend so much time trying to work out an opinion of, you end up drinking the whole thing before reaching a conclusion [22032012]

Cask at the Old White Swan, York. Medium white head. Gold body. Lemongrass, lemon. Bittersweet. Dry finish.
