3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
a citrus hop aroma with some dark chocolate hints. the flavor has a roasted maltiness with toffee and caramel and a slight off tinniness. The finish disappoints with not a strong enough hop finish for an IPA and not the sweet malt in a dark ale.
Bottled (backlog). More or less black colour, small beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, liquorice and quite much fruity and floral notes. Flavour is quite much the same. Almost like a mix of a bodied IPA and a Porter in a good balance. tfontana (1014) - Fremont, New Hampshire, USA - SEP 27, 2015
UPDATED: APR 14, 2016 Bottle poured into pint glass from Signal Variety, Plaistow NH. Aroma is chocolate, roasted coffee and licorice, slightly smokey. Appearance is dark, dark reddish black (perfect for the blood moon!) at the bottom of the glass, opaque black at the top, with sparkle (where I could see it) and finger-width beige head with good retention and attractive lacing. Taste is rich moderate sweetness with roasty bitterness. Palate is medium to full bodied with creamy texture, lively carbonation to remind you you’re not having a porter or a stout and wet, long roasted bittersweet finish. Overall, a fantastic way to take in an eclipse, but would be fantastic otherwise, too. Bravo! 619photos (19) - Garner, North Carolina, USA - SEP 17, 2015
Too much roast forward for my tastes. Lacks the bitterness I was seeking out of a black IPA. ClassyBeagle (376) - New Jersey, USA - AUG 23, 2015
A little watery but a decent malt flavor balances out this beer nicely. DavoleBomb (1867) - Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 5, 2015
Poured into a pint glass. Keep in mind that I openly hate the style.
4.25 A: Black color. Two fingers of frothy tan head. Retention is good and lots of lacing is left.
3.25 S: This isn’t as hoppy as most of its brethren. It’s still hoppy, but it doesn’t have the major clash between citrus and roast that most have. Hops give a combination of floral, herbal, and citrus. Light coffee roastiness from the base. Not too exciting, but not offensive either.
3.0 T: The taste is pretty much like the nose. Citrus, herbal, and floral hops clash with coffee and roastiness of the base. Like others of the style, the flavors don’t work together. However, in this neither side of the flavors is overly powerful, so it’s at least a little less at odds. In any case, it’s still kind of boring.
3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy. Good enough here.
3.0 D: I guess I was wrong about the black IPA thing just being a fad. It pains me to see "now year round!" on this label, but that’s okay, I’ll just pass over it year round at the beer store.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle dark dark brown/black with nice thick tan head which slowly dissipates. This ipa has a great body and mouthfeel. No coffee or chocolate, it is pure ipa with a great body. My new favorite winter ipa. Taste piney but also sweetish Granny Smith like hop flavor. Some orange as well. Well done

Black pour with small tan head. Aroma of citrus, malt, and some alcohol. Initial sweet and malty flavor yields to a hoppy, yet smooth and clean finish. Pleasant aftertaste of roast. hershiser2 (3476) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - FEB 12, 2015
Pours black with a small tan head. Smells of luscious ruby red grapefruit, light caramel. Taste is a nice combo of grapefruit, orange, and caramel. Yummy. jamesewelch (259) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - FEB 5, 2015

Aroma: Flora and Citrus hops, caramel malts
Appearance: Black, tan head
Taste: Heavy bitter, light sweet, sweet up front and bitter in back, roasted malts, not really coffee-like but just roasted
Palate: Medium to full body, slick texture, average carbonation, bitter finish
Overall: Nice body and nice bitterness. Roasted notes comes out after initial taste, more on the finish than taste. Very smooth. Nice hops and malty/roastiness. Great example of the style.
