Tap at Bakushu Club Popeye, Tokyo. Mostly clear amber shade. Half a finger of head. Aroma of orange peel, perfume, some banana yeastiness. Pretty sweet upon first sip before easing off. On keg in Gar Eden. served in nice large bulb wine glass. Clear, rich looking golden amber, thing white head, oily looking in glass. Nose is eatery fruity, lots of caramel, burnt sugar, yeasty fruity esters, orange citrous. Nose is lovely but the taste is slightly more muted. Needs a bit more kick not he tongue. Caramel, orange. Draught at Bungalow. Slightly cloudy gold with frothy head and great lacing. Aroma is yeasty with great fresh apple and banana notes. Banana initially comes through, almost like a weizen, then the yeast and alcohol bring it back to the Belgian ale style with a nice hoppy bitter finish. UPDATED: APR 20, 2014 Tap at Kraft Work. Golden colour, not much head. Aroma is sweet, fruity, boozy, bit spicy. Taste is similar, boozy fruits and sweetness. Nice enough, but maybe not completely my thing.
Rerate: 4/14 Aroma is sweet and boozy. Tried this last year and it has much improved. Fruity and yeasty. Apples and bit of mango maybe. Pretty authentic. Last time lacked a bit of body, but it’s getting there. Lightly spicy. Will definitely try again.

Draught. This was really impressive. Cloudy dark amber with frothy white head. Sticky hops and caramel nose. Medium-low carbonation. Strong flavours of brown sugar, floral hops and malt. Nicely balanced, alcohol nicely woven into the mix. Really good stuff.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2013 Aroma: light sour Belgium note, floral, honey and pear.
Flavor: pear, honey, light apricot note followed by a light sour orange and finishes with a smooth, roasted and smoky grain. An underlying bitterness then grabs hold.
Comment: a good one to sip slowly and let warm a bit in order to get at the more subtle flavors. Apparently uses wild "kaki" (persimmon?) yeast. The texture reminds me of full-bodied biodynamic white wines from S. France. The use of wild yeast is said to produce a greater variety of alcohols giving it a full mouth feel without excessive residual sugar.

Spicy, orange-y hops, peach esters and doughy yeast merge within this Tripel’s silky body, leading to alcohol warmth and delicate honeyed sugars.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam sinks into the misty honeyed gold.
-The very low carbonation is not surprising from Niwa-san, yet it is strange for such an established style. With an open mind, this remains a very interesting brew.
-Mouthfeel is lean and flavors are well presented. This is a classy beverage.
-The doughy yeast character is strong and may put off some people.
-This is a fun brew all around, yet it fails to be as compelling as the old Hakusekikan recipes this guy was executing.

It poured a nice milky yellow with a bit of a white head of foam. It had a nice rich malty taste and was a very solid tripel. I think it is better balanced than their dubbel. I must say that I am quite impressed with Outsider, the beers they make seem solid and they are trying new things which is great. Draught at Beer Belly during the Strong Beer days event. Fruity, apple, banana, and yeasty nose. Light cloudy honey. Very smooth and creamy white head. Very estery, sweet, and yeasty initial; mid has apples and pears, and get a bit wine-like; smooth finish with a bit of a hop hit. Nice enough, but that final hop bite is a bit too much for this style.
