Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity sweetish malty dark fruit aroma. Sweetish malty dark fruit plum flavor with hints of caramel. Has a sweetish malty fruity dark fruit finish.

Bottled. Amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is very much barley wineish with all the malts, plum and alcohol in the body. Flavour is raisins, some bready malts, caramel malts and alcohol. A very pleasant and enjoyable barley wine.

Draught at Ushi-Tora, Tokyo. Hazy brownish amber, no head. Salty woody nose. Fairly sweet with dense full body. Well rounded and elegant with a flavour reminiscent f mature plum wine. Warming with growing late bitterness. Complex and full flavoured.

KyotoLefty (10254) - Kyoto, JAPAN - OCT 16, 2008
UPDATED: JAN 28, 2009 2007 version, bottle. Dark brown with a reddish-orange tint, high, foamy off-white head. Very fruity, hoppy aroma, with dark fruits, a good amount of sweetness, port, and strong malt. But hops predominate like in a Bigfoot. Very appealing aroma. Very sweet flavor, fruity, cherries, caramel, honey, alcohol heat. Good hops for bittering and aroma. Great balance. Very complex and interesting, and a great, dry finish of hops, rich malt, sweet, and heat. A very nicely done barley wine. This has perfect body and carbonation. Really well done. A treat. Best BW I’ve had from Japan.

My Bottom Line:
Oxidized caramel malts and minty hop vapors coalesce in this soft and rich Barley Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the dark amber.
-Oxidation works very well with this type of grain bill, making the nose a tad more alluring. However, at the 4-year mark, you can smell that this is not going to get better.
-Carbonation is appropriately moderate and residual sugars levels are high but approachable.
-This must have been near excellent a couple of years ago.

4-year-old bottle. Thx Mark !
