He he. Just saw Ive never rated this. Draft to pint at Pikes pour clear straw yellow with large foamy white head. Nose crystal malt and light skunk. Taste light sweet crystal malt up front, then strong grain and adjunct. Heck, $6 for a pitcher.

Standard pale lagers came into being in the U.S. in the second half of the 19th century as a result of the entrepreneurial efforts of German immigrants, who had quickly picked up on this originally Czech beer style - thus being co-responsible for the rapid spread of the style throughout the world; this is one of those originals, a contemporary of Budweiser, Schlitz and others. May or may not have won an award in Chicago in 1893 - historical documentation seems to fall short - but whatever the case, it grew to huge popularity in the 20th century and, due to takeovers and clever marketing, remained a staple of industrial American brewing till this very day. Loose and bubbly, off-white head, quickly dissolving in the middle but well-retaining on the edges albeit thinly so; cristal clear pale yellow golden robe with hardly any visible fizz, looking as stereotypical as it gets for the style. Aroma of sweaty grains, industrial soap, cat pee, melting rubber (quite sharply sulfuric at first but fading after a while), the overcooked odour of pasteurization, glue, wet rice paper, margarine, corn flour, plastic - nothing very natural, so to speak. Neutral onset as can be expected, sweetish corn and sharper grains, bit papery in the middle, cereally and a tad margarine-like (as in: buttery but in a very industrial manner), with carbonation that remains on the soft side for this style. Both plastic-like and - to a somewhat lesser extent - metallic flavors are added in the middle, but the corn flour factor actually manages to become a little bit bready and doughy in the finish, which is probably the only redeeming factor here; otherwise this beer goes down in a neutral, metallic and totally bland way, watery even due to the total lack of hops. Your average American adjunct lager, with a little more body (or in fact a little more corn creaminess) than that mournfully thin MGD or even Bud, so in this respect not the worst weapon of choice for those who have no other intention than to drink gallons of the least offensive - and cheapest - alcoholic drink they can find, though the aroma remained downright offensive to me. This beer seems to have a kind of cult following in much the same way as Heineken has in the Netherlands or Jupiler in Belgium - clearly the result of clever marketing. With all due respects for the respectable age of this brand, this is very obviously one of those beers the craft breweries acted against in the late 20th century - so in a sense, we owe the current beer revolution, sweeping the whole civilized world in a way I could never have foreseen when I started taking beer seriously, to bland industrial rubbish like this. Glad I got the chance to study it this closely as it is only very scarcely available in Europe, big thanks Ster for bringing me this bottle (bottled in the Milwaukee plant, one of six plants that make it) all the way from America!
