Most American belgo stouts have let me down. Too much tartness from the Belgian yeast usually brings out a the acidic side of a stout to me.
However this beer is my first drinkin’ exception.
Solid black pour with mahogany thick head that leaves nice lacing on the glass. Initial taste comes through smooth and floral. The acidity seems to be hidden by the wine barrel used. Instead of acidity I get a fruity full oil yet floral finish which reminds me of a big buttery Chardonnay. This is one if the best BA’d stout I have had that was not in a bourbon barrel.
Bottle, bit of a gusher. Aroma is malty with chocolate, cherry and some coffee notes. Pours black with light brown white head. Taste of chocolate with some cherry tartness and a little coffee. Finishes very smooth with a bit of tart.

Bottle 160 of 960 poured a brown so dark it took on a black hue w/ a small dark tan cap and minimal lace. Huge aromas of red wine, chocolate, blackberry, and roasted malts. Initial flavor is a moderate sweet w/ a light bitter finish of short duration. Taste is fair amount of chocolate and roast, the wine and oaky character linger on the pallet. Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of sweet chocolate, caramel, Belgian fruit notes, hints of roast, coffee, some roast, hints of slight oak and wine but pretty hidden, mix fairly well with the fruit. Taste is a mix of sweet chocolate, coffee, roast, some anise, hints of fruity notes with grape, earth, slight oak, finishing fairly sweet.

750 ml. 455 of 960 . Swing top bottle shared with Gabe. Pours a thin light beige head, over a clear very dark brown (SRM 35) body.......nose is molasses, brown sugar, vinous tones, coffee, cocoa.....taste is vinous with light coffee, chocolate tones, tobacco, leading to vanilla hints, light umami, with beef and mushroom tone, finishing with very slight bitterness.....mouth feel light of medium, alcohol warmth lightly present, carbonation low. This is a slightly light take on an Imperial Stout. It has nice balance and complexity, but lacks the overall total richness of the best. Bottle 375 of 960 - Despite a bad experience with their saison, I’ve decided to give this brewer another shot (with a style that is much harder to screw up) - pour is black, with a fairly thick, dark tan lace - nose of chocolate, smoke, berries (blackberry, raspberry), light acidity, light roast, vinous notes - body and texture are a bit flabby and lifeless, but the flavor is nice - sweet up front, with a fair amount of chocolate - the wine character soon follows, along with some acidity, both of which cut the sweetness a bit - roast and smoke arrive late, as well as some lingering bitterness and oaky character - pretty nice - I may try some more from them in the future. 750 ml swing top bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lasting brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, dark chocolate, red grapes, oak, light carmel and light vanilla. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of roastiness, oak, bakers cocoa, light dried fruit and light smoke with a smooth dry lingering roasty oak finish. Head is initially small, frothy, dark brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is opaque black (flashlight tested).
Aroma is moderately malty (dark chocolate, roasted grain, coffee), with notes of vanilla, oak, blackberry, alcohol.
Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively/fizzy carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic, lightly to moderately astringent.
A bit straightforward and basic for an Impy stout, but a good rendition nonetheless. The oak is quite apparent but thankfully isn’t overdone, and the berryish note helps provide extra intrigue beyond the usual stouty aromas. Quite sweet but still balanced and reasonably drinkable for its size...the combo of bitterness, alcohol, and astringency is just able to fend off the sugars. The mouthfeel is perhaps the least impressive thing here...it’s sticky-syrupy-flabby and the prickly carbonation doesn’t help. Overall a good example of the style, and I think this brewer does show some promise, but as with the Autumnus I still find myself wishing they’d do some lower-gravity un-oaked brews. Or at the very least with these big beers, package them in a smaller bottle format.
