3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle pours a cloudy black with a rapidly dissipating brown head. Aromas of chocolate and toasted malt. Taste is a bit of whiskey upfront, roasted malt, and a sweet oaky aftertaste. The traditional stout flavors are overwhelmed, but for 10% ABV it's surprisingly drinkable.
Bottle from Capone’s. Pours hazy black with no head. Nose is molasses, oak, dark choc. Tastes flat, with notes of oak, dark malt, molasses, blackberry, plum. Smooth finish. I got a lot of blackberry in this. notalush (5910) - Lakewood, Colorado, USA - MAY 10, 2014
I like the original iteration of the beer okay, so when I saw this on sale I figured I would give it a shot - oily black pour - not head to speak of - looks almost completely still - nose of newly emptied whiskey barrels (charred oak, whiskey), raisin, anise, plum, bittersweet chocolate - slick mouthfeel, minimal to no carbonation - flavor I fairly sweet date, anise, tamarind - somewhat boozy whiskey, but not overpowering - moderate oak - some balancing spiciness, damn wood bitterness, and some tannic/tart character - however, it is still a whiskey barrel RIS, so there is the expected heat in the finish and sweetness gets a bit much after the first glass, but this is quite good - good for a small glass after dinner - not so much for me to finish by myself before bedtime - god, I’m getting old. bschmie (5) - - MAR 11, 2014 does not count
Completely flat, some sort of amateur bottling contraption or process. No head whatsoever, making it an undrinkable--yet pricey foray. zoucrew102 (2059) - - MAR 8, 2014
750ml bottle #102/900. Great aroma of booze and whiskey as well as some chocolate and vanilla notes. Pours black with no head and no lacing. Rich chocolate malt with a hint of vanilla to start. Finishes quite smooth with the whiskey and oak flavors shining though with just a bit of booze. One of their best. Aged approximately 6 months. theothermatt (286) - Lakewood, Colorado, USA - OCT 20, 2013
750ml flip top bottle. Pours jet black. Tan head disappears quickly. Very sweet and oaky aroma. Some hints of vanilla and coffee. Very wet to the lips and a little thin body. The barrel aged qualities are there. As it warms there are some fruity aspects with a bit of belgian style spiciness. Interesting.

Bottle 899. Pours a very dark brown, near black with rapidly settling brown head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is sweet, fruity, plum, grape, pear, oaky, whiskey, alcohol, smells intense. Flavor is plum, whisky, oaky, grape, fruity and vanilla, slightly roasted, dark malt finish. Very mild cocoa roast aftertaste. Whiskey is subtle and tastefully done. Flavors are sweet and intense, slightly boozy but balanced. Flavor is not particularly roasted or stout like, not sure what the standard version tastes like. Not sure if it was the quantity or the warming of the beer, but the whiskey, vanilla tones become a bit dominant and cloying after a bit. Soft carbonation. medium to full body, and smooth texture. An interesting, strong, fruity, mildly whiskey, strong stout. stumpyiliz (218) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 31, 2013
Amazing black pour with thick mahogany head. Nose of vanilla, caramel, spicey soy, and toffee. Flavor is dead on, smokey wood, bourbon, vanilla, great dark chocolate and long finish. ajnepple (6983) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAY 30, 2013
750 ml swing top bottle purchased at the brewery. Black appearance with a small brown head that quickly dissipates and leaves minimal lacing. Dark roasted malty aroma with dark chocolate, oak, light whiskey and light vanilla. Similar flavor, pretty smooth with some smoke and a touch of dark fruits. Body is medium to full with soft carbonation and a creamy feel. Pretty tasty!
