In the 18th century, this bold, strong stout was brewed in London for the long and treacherous trip to the Imperial courts of Russia. In keeping with this stoic tradition, this whiskey-barrel aged imperial stout is warm, full bodied and fit for a Czar. Ingredients: Roasted Barley, Pale, Chocolate, Munich & Crystal Malts, Magnum & Fuggles Hops, Yeast.

2015 edition bottle, 11.9% alcohol listed. Black body with a hint of transparency and a very modest beige head. Heavy aroma of fusels and cherries, some notes of barley but the chemicals are coming off way too strong on the nose. Flavour is thick and chewy molasses and licorice, strong with a bite, and a dry finish. This hits on a few levels but it lacks the finesse that a brute of a brew like this style should have - it’s overbearing at this point.

courtesy of fiulijn - black beer with no head retention; aroma of dark chocolate, whisky, vanilla and tobacco; light notes of burnt ribbon; full-bodied, sweet, quite thick, some fair bitterness; aftertaste of figs, black chocolate and vanilla, corn and burnt ribbon again, light reminiscence of whisky wood - good but not my favorite IRS profile

Bottle: Poured a dark black color stout with a nice dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with some black chocolates notes with some dry woody notes. Taste is also dominated by dry woody notes with light vanilla undertones and some dry and bitter black chocolate notes. Body is about average but thinner then I was anticipating with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. A bit too dry for my taste buds and lacking body with some lack of integration between al the flavors.

Wow.

Bottle vintage 2014. Appearance is oily black with a thin layer of mocha head. Aroma is black liqourice, vanilla, marshmallow, and ash. Taste is roasted malts, vanilla, coffee, and ash. Medium mouthfeel, with light carbonation. This really caught me by surprise, it’s well balanced, with a nice amount of barrel, and virtually no heat, mouthfeel is a bit thin but overall really damn tasty, well done!

A lovely aroma of carmel and malts with a hint of alcohol. It pours black with a small tight bubble head that clings to the edge of the glass and reminds me of a monk’s tonsure. The ring of head lasts for quite a while. The taste is of fruit, maybe prunes and there is a gentle effervescence. The drink leaves a pleasant but slightly bitter after taste. Mouth feel is substantial but not too thick. This is a pleasant warming beverage that I would put up beside other top imperial stouts like North Coast Old Rasputin.

Bottle from a trade. Shared @ RBBWG 2015. Dark brown, small head. Medium carbonation. Well balanced beer. Aroma of roasted malts, light bourbon, some vanilla, not too sweet or boozy. Good!

Thanks to JefVerstraete! 650 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBWG IV. Blackish dark brown, little to no head; Nose is sweet cheap chocolate, mocha, light umami, sweet sugar. Taste is vanilla, sweet bourbon, sweet cheap chocolate, quite a bit of liquorish, brown sugar, lots of bourbon vanilla sweetness, finish is a bit bitter, faint roast but mainly sweet. Slick bodied, not the best in its category but very nice all the same.
