COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the 18th century, this bold, strong stout was brewed in London for the long and treacherous trip to the Imperial courts of Russia. In keeping with this stoic tradition, this whiskey-barrel aged imperial stout is warm, full bodied and fit for a Czar. Ingredients: Roasted Barley, Pale, Chocolate, Munich & Crystal Malts, Magnum & Fuggles Hops, Yeast.

650 ml bottle. This suffers from the inevitable comparison to Driftwood Singularity -- its closest B.C. contemporary. The P49 is sweeter, not as dark, not as complex, not as balanced, not as strong. Its syrupy, dark and tasty, true, but its also raw, very bitter and overly dry. I dont have the patience to cellar my beer, but this might improve if you leave it alone in a dark place for a few months.

Bottle. Black with a creamy light mocha head. Chocolate, vanilla, light booze, drip coffee, coconut husk, moderate carbonation and although full body seems thin on the palate, or at least not very viscous, sweet on finish with some rye, whiskey, chocolate and vanilla.

A Russian imperial stout demon converted to angelicness. The Paradisio to the usual Inferno of the genre...... Where there had been burn there is salve; where there had been ash there is smiling vanilla; where there had been unforgiving leather lashings there are calming strokes of summer cherry. Milkiness without conditions. Sweet tarred raisins. And yet a burning gnaws underneath, a restricted destruction corralled by the consequences of changing allegiances back to the infernal. Emptied, the glass smells of soy sauce..... All things good of infancy and childhood: your first suckling; your first piece of birthday cake; your first Halloween treat; your first awareness of being loved. The barrels alcohol is the constant sequencing these primary memories of oily, toasty, sugary goodness...... And still, the barrel juices make me melancholic while my mouth burns succulent....

Bottle via the Vancouver crew. Clear-edged brown. Brown head. Molasses sweet, vanilla-tweaked. Could use age, mild chocolate and mocha. Better body than I first thought. Touch of soy. Alright.

On tap at Alibi Room. Aroma is dark fruits, alcohol, some notes of coffee and chocolate. Taste is sweet, dark fruits, alcohol, some chocolate. Roasted malt aftertaste. Just not bad as for RIS.

650 ml bottle poured. Waxed. Pour a dark reddish black with a small bubble head. Rough aroma of overly sweet malt. Flavor is much smoother with chocolate, dark fruit. And a big sweet finish. Interesting beer.

Thanks to Matt for this brew!

2015 edition bottle, 11.9% alcohol listed. Black body with a hint of transparency and a very modest beige head. Heavy aroma of fusels and cherries, some notes of barley but the chemicals are coming off way too strong on the nose. Flavour is thick and chewy molasses and licorice, strong with a bite, and a dry finish. This hits on a few levels but it lacks the finesse that a brute of a brew like this style should have - its overbearing at this point.

courtesy of fiulijn - black beer with no head retention; aroma of dark chocolate, whisky, vanilla and tobacco; light notes of burnt ribbon; full-bodied, sweet, quite thick, some fair bitterness; aftertaste of figs, black chocolate and vanilla, corn and burnt ribbon again, light reminiscence of whisky wood - good but not my favorite IRS profile

Bottle: Poured a dark black color stout with a nice dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with some black chocolates notes with some dry woody notes. Taste is also dominated by dry woody notes with light vanilla undertones and some dry and bitter black chocolate notes. Body is about average but thinner then I was anticipating with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. A bit too dry for my taste buds and lacking body with some lack of integration between al the flavors.
