An aggressive, tropical NZ hopped aroma gives way to the rich, copper coloured malt base and a huge lingering bitterness to finish. In an ode to its ancestors, we’ve used all English malts in the grist and a bold English bittering hop in the boil.

Pours a crystal clear copper colour. Aroma is grapefruit, citrus, earthy with some malt sweetness, suspect Columbus hops. Medium mouthfeel, taste is grapefuit rind, smooth lingering bitterness with hints of earthyness, licorice. Well balanced against malt. Overall a solid IPA.

I thought...... that the aroma in this was muddy. I also thought that the hops were wet and turgid, and that the bitterness and sweetness were too far apart. This is not that I didn’t enjoy it, it’s just this is a bit disjointed and mixed in delivery. IPA is a big contest and this isn’t a contender .

330mL BB 20/05/14 Pale copper gold body, decent clarity, holds a tight off-white foam with good lace. Lifted hop aroma; melons, stonefruits, tropical fruits, bit of resiny woody sappy character with a solid biscuity malt undertone. Full bodied, moderate carbonation, lingers for a good measure on the palate. Hops aplenty on the body; grassy, sappy, unripe tropical fruits & stonefruit stone, with a healthy slug of bitterness that cuts through biscuity, nutty malt character. Tidy sort of beer, probably not quite what I’d consider an IPA in body, but certainly in bitterness.

Bottle from Brothers Brewery, Auckland, August 2014. Orange/amber with a small white head. Aroma and taste of hops, grass, grapefruit and some mango. The finish was bitter. A descent one.

mattyhennessy (377) - Highton, AUSTRALIA - MAY 21, 2014
Pours a clear caramel brown with a beige head. Woody, malty aroma with a sweet citrus finish. Taste has some bitter citrus peel, oak wood, and a healthy dose of nz hops. Appropriately titled. I enjoyed this but I can imagine many wouldn’t.

Rich malty look to this IPA. Aroma is very earthy - definitely more English style on this bugger. Taste is the same with malts leading to charge; very resinous and thick. Palate is bitterness without much fruit or sweetness. Not a keeper for me, especially with so many nice fruity NZ IPAs out there.

Bottle at Ibis Tokyo Shinjuku. Cloudy brown - white head. Nice hoppy, oiley hoppy, buttery bisquit, grapey notes, knækbrød, ok bitterness, hash aroma, rsin, light piney notes......

Maris (1588) - Canberra, AUSTRALIA - MAR 26, 2014
From a 330ml bottle on 26/3/2014. Pours a cloudy copper with a medium head. Has a pleasant light, fruity, grassy, hoppy aroma. However, the taste is a bit messy, with little malt, tropical fruit, and some earthy, spicy and metallic flavours, followed by a quite abrupt, almost harsh, dry bitterness. Has a fullish body and quite lively carbonation. All up, quite disappointing.

A caramel copper pour with a foamy light beige head. Minty, grape, tropical fruit hop bouquet. Fairly light bodied, silky mouthfeel with an earthy, minty & marihuana flavor plus a mildly piney bitterness towards the end. The nose & the flavor don’t really match but the overall package is quite solid.

Craft Clerkenwell. Bottle thanks to big Dave. Chars! Hazy amber beer, good pale cream coloured head. Palate is light and very airy. Light sweetish malt. Little lactose. Mild hop skunk and spice and then tangerine led tropical fruits. Softish airy finish. Mildly bitter fruity linger. Good stuff.
