Bottle. A really dark brown beer topped by a dense, finger-thick dark beige head. The aroma is pretty roasted, with some bonfire and dried fruits. Pine cones and resins too, some grass. Notes of molasses and licorice. The flavor has the same bonfire and licorice hints found in the aroma, with a faint peppery touch, pine cones and grass. Full body, semi-dry and quite carbonated,. with a nice bitterness towards the end. Grass, pine cones and a touch of black pepper and licorice. Unusual, but nice indeed. 140315 Meilby (11692) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - MAR 15, 2014

Bottle from the brewery and drunk at home on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Black dark brown beer with a lasting tan head. Chocolate and lime/lemon on the aroma. But mostly chocolate but lovely chocolate. Again it’s just full and clean and fautless in the mouth. Roasty chocolate flavour. Hoppy chocolate lime. Strange but quite nice at the same time.

Long: Thank you Leighton for this one! A clear, deep cola pour generates a mega, rocky coffee beige foam. Excellent formation and retention. Nose is dusty, farmy, cocoa powder, deep pumpernickel bread, torched sugar, really fresh dark bread, vanilla. Taste is bitter, dark bread, unsweetened cocoa powder. Quite the dusty mouthfeel with higher aeration as expected for style but feeling a bit too chalky. Still, a well done black saison which is asking for trouble.
Flaws: Overly chalky mouthfeel

330 ml bottle from Ales By Mail, served in a Teku. Bottled on 07-10-2013. Pours a dark brown colour, no light passing through, with a huge and persistently fluffy dark beige head. Great lacing retention. Looks pitch black in the glass. Less roasted/chocolaty aroma than I was expecting, with the earthy and spicey presence still dominating. Saison yeast notes, a bit of liquorice and just a hint of smoke/ash. Much more roasted in the mouth, with some vanilla and dark chocolate qualities. A bit of hops resin and pine needles as well. Glorious texture, with a velvety and luscious mouthfeel. Quite dry, medium body and lively carbonation. Damn fine!
