33 cl bottle at home into a tulip. Pours a clear, deep red-brown colour with a white head. Malt-driven aroma of caramel and roasted barley with some fruit. Initial taste of sweet malt, followed by a light bitterness. Nice mouthfeel: plain and with a good dryness that leads to another sip. Almost earthy in character, this is a fine beer and at a nice drinking strength.

Classic dubbel, launched in the fifties for a festivity in the village of Sint-Lievens-Esse which is held only once every 50 years. Tasted often from bottle and tap, this is a hazy bronze coloured ale with light beige, medium thick head and a soft, creamy, almost buttery texture, malt sweet, very caramelly with a light sourishness, bready and a tad chocolatey, dried fruits, somewhat metallic, nutty, yeasty, soft herbal hoppiness in the finish without true bitterness. Your average, ordinary dubbel I suppose, nothing exceptional, just simple old school decency.

33cl bottle bb06/2016, Delhaize. Deep brown bordeaux pour, Belgian rock of foam, quite fizzy. Earthy nose of roasted chestnut, brown mushroom, liquorice, candy sugar. Taste equivalent to a liquorice cane dipped in a rain water reservoir, dark earthy with a metallic edge. Dry toffee and some candy sugar join this fizzy dubbels modest, arch-Belgian appeal. I prefer my dubbels a bit fuller and creamier (cf. La Trappe). Might revisit on tap.

Keg @ De Zandloper Taphouse, Brugge. Very dark with good pale malt Belgian ale nose. Theres a hint of roasted malt in its taste, and texture wise it has a lovely smoothness about it with a pleasant sweetened malt finish.

Bamsen78 (5170) - Snderborg, DENMARK - OCT 28, 2014
Bottle from a bottle shop in Brugge. Pours hazy coffee brown with airy but creamy and stable light tan head. Clear aroma of fruit, flowers and hops, with notes of malt. Sweetish flavour of caramel malt and fruit, with notes of roast, hops and flowers. Bitter, roasty aftertaste with sweetish, estery and malty hints. Rather well balanced and quite decent.
