The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas’ time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Any time I can get my hands on something referred to as "liquid bread", with a ABV of 7.90%, I’m going to be happy... This dopplebock poured into my large tulip glass with a rich amber color. The glass I used allowed for a great, light tan, rich foamy head. It stayed around for enough time to really aid the great nose of malt and lingering streaks of toffee. Had a wonderful heavy malt taste, with slight bits of toffee, and fresh wheat bread with honey. This beer, for being so substantial, really had a very drinkable, medium bodied mouth feel. This beer is pairing great with my aged white cheddar, but don’t rule out the schnitzel. Never rule out the schnitzel. I’ll leave the fasting to the Monks...Enjoy

Drank with Bram at Saskia’s place near Munich 18-2-2017. Very sweet and alcoholy smell. Beer is a bit richer than that but still not very balanced, too sugary.

Birra di colore ambrato. Schiuma morbida e persistente. All’olfatto note di malto tostato e caffe.

Bottle, 330 ml. Pours slightly hazy deep amber/orange with a thin sheen of off-white head. Small amount of visible carb, large bubbles, thick lacing. Big, rich, malty and sweet aroma with loads of molasses, caramel, wholemeal bread, slight honey, slight dark fruit, touch of cinnamon and ginger. Something of a meaty characteristic to it, like honey glazed ham. Taste is caramel and molasses again, some slightly burned, grainy malt, more fruit emerging towards the swift finish, which is moderately dry with lingering light bitterness and some sweet-ish wholemeal bread in the aftertaste. Moderately sweet, less rich and full than in the aroma and lacking in spice, but tasty still. Body is surprisingly light and texture is smooth, helped along by minimal carbonation; very easy drinking for a 7.9! Good stuff overall, exemplary doppel.

Sötét borostyán szín. Pörkölt, karamelles íz. Karakteres egy sör. Az alsóerjesztésűek egyik hercege.

Floral smells, sweet malt and caramel. Pours brown orange with a instantly dissipating thin head. Tastes of sweet dried fruit bread and a balanced undercurrent of alcohol. Low carbonation and dry mouthfeel. Creditable but not my favorite double bock.
