Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours near black with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges and laces. Aroma has lots of dark grains with some earthy roasted malts. Flavor has a nice dark grain and roasted malt combination with a bit of bread underlying.

Pour on tap at the brewery, dark black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of cocoa powder, roasted malt, slightly acidic malt, hints of dark fruit, hints of coffee, slight red fruit. 12 oz bottle my brother brought back for me from a recent Michigan trip. Pours an inky black with a small chocolate colored head that faded quickly and left some spotty lacing. Aroma is dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt and grains. Taste is a bit grainy up front with roasted malts, cocoa, dark chocolate and coffee. Slight hint of hop resin on the back end. Quick, dry finish of roasty malt and dark chocolate. Medium bodied, thin and slick texture, high carbonation. Rather sweet and definitely smooth. But for an oatmeal stout the mouthfeel is way too thin. Not bad at all, actually quite good. Bottle: Deep brown pour, zeroing in on fully black towards the center. Little white chunks of sediment float around. Foamy, big, & bubbly tan head sinks quickly. Weird looking. Aroma leads with thick notes of cocoa, creamy oats, black licorice, & moderate anise. Deep cocoa syrup flavors emerge on the first sip; hints of cream & sugar underneath. Mild roasted malts, faint milkiness, & a bit of anise towards the back-end. Finishes like you just ate a bittersweet cocoa bar. Slightly creamy mouth feel, but a little thin in body. Not bad.
