Great beer and it's not terribly expensive . ( at least in Pittsburgh ) .
Tastes much better on tap at a bar than the bottled stuff ( which is contract brewed by Jones Brewing in Smithton, PA. ( they make Stoney's and other crappy swill ) .
I rather drink the small batch of it that Penn brewery makes for their restaurant .
This stuff is kind of restrained tasting. I like a more in your face and aromatic beer .
I have had it at PNC park, the baseball stadium here in Pittsburgh and it is great in that watching-sports kind of context .
Good with German food because of that understated conservative taste .
I buy a case of it here and there for myself and guests to sip on .
The ' kaiser pils ' that Penn Brewery makes seasonably is much better...ask for it if you go to the Brewery . Frank (4236) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 28, 2002
In my limited experience, this rivals the almighty Yuengling Traditional Lager as the best PA brew. Pale color. Lively carbonation. Not as dry as most pilsners but that's a good thing in this case as the sweetness comes from some very pleasant apple notes and is well balanced by hops in the finish. jeffwhalen (45) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 21, 2003
My first encounter with a "good" beer i.e. micro brew...remember being impressed with taste and the fact that it was a Pittsburgh Beer not from PBC. Strykzone (7659) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - APR 3, 2003
An outstanding beer. Kudos to the brewers on this one. Only negative is a slight aftertaste, but it is not significant. A very good beer. MaiBockAddict (1497) - Good Beer Bar Deprived, New Jersey, USA - NOV 21, 2004
Tap at Split Rock, ’04. Golden with a golden head and clear. Clean aroma with a touch of hops and malt. Nice malty hoppy balance. Some malt sweetness, hop flavor, and lingering bitterness and hops. Decent pils.

Tap at Split Rock. Golden in color wit h a golden head and clear. Clean aroma. Nicely balanced with hops and malt. Some sweetnees. Good beer. Decent. RblWthACoz (964) - Brooklyn, New York, USA - FEB 2, 2008
Pours a cloudy amber with a decent off white head that does not really stick around too long. Nose is a bit woody with a slight perfume to it. Flavor is much more robust than I was expecting. Thick tree character with a stringent sweet edge that has an overall thick caramel tone to it. Feel is smooth on the liquid with a fairly low carbonation. Very drinkable. A very well made brew with a lot of body and character to it. Definitely worth a try. VENOM (941) - Connecticut, USA - SEP 27, 2001
Nice rendition. Spicy and aromatic with a decent balance. Crisp and dry and subtly sweet. nike (966) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 29, 2011
One of the first popular micos in the Pittsburgh area. Classic Vienna style pilsner….excellent. Maybe my rating is higher because of loyalty to this brewery. Aroma of caramel, sweet malts, and hops. The flavor is sweet malts medium body and a bitter slightly hoppy finish. gripweed57 (2865) - Hamilton Square, New Jersey, USA - JUN 6, 2017
From old tasting notes. Lovely orange gold color. Big creamy white head. Fruity, berry like aroma. Delicious sweet toasted flavor upfront.mtangy hop finish. Light bittersweet aftertaste. Very flavorful and well balanced. Quite tasty.
