Pennichuck Feuerwehrmann Schwarzbier (Firefighter Black Lager)

RATINGS: 123   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.49/5   EST. CALORIES: 150   ABV: 5%
Schwarzbier (shvahrts-beer) is German for "black-beer". Brewed to be a light bodied dark beer with a clean, crisp, refreshing finish. Its well balanced malt character is complimented with a touch of roastiness. Brewed using imported black patent malt and noble hops. Pairs with chunky dark breads, marinated meats such as brisket or German Sauerbraten. Not recommended for cellaring. Serve in a flute or pilsner glass at 45-50deg

Pours a dark brown with beige head. Aroma of roast, chocolate, malts. Similar taste, some hops in the finish.. Nothing exciting here.

black, tinged red. caramel in the nose, some roast. body is pretty thin. caramel malts up front, and another just-barely noticable presence of roast in the finish. not bad. not great.

From a bomber bottle. Note: This was about a year old so it may have been slightly past its prime. Pours a dark color with a finger of head which disappeared very quickly. The aroma has some roasted malts and slight sweetness. The initial flavor is that of dark fruit sweetness and roasted malts. Some coffee is also present, though its very slight. On the aftertaste some of the noble hop profile comes through. Overall its very well balanced and a very decent dark lager.

Bottle, 650 ml. Pours deep dark amber brown with a small, tan colored head. I agree with the previous reviewer -- smells of cured meat. Id add to this an aroma of wet grass. Fairly full, creamy body. Quickly diminishes though. Notes of smoke up front, with a cream/milk middle, and a finish rounded out with hops. Good beer and one of the best local Schwarzbiers Ive tried.

Looks like Pepsi, with similarly moderate carbonation, a little bit sweet, with a some cherry notes, mucho malt, a little roasted on the finish. A fine digestif.

Thanks to mcox90 for this one! Pours black that’s brown against light with disappearing off white head. The aroma is nice, it’s lightly toasty and roasty, with some bread notes as well. The flavor is lightly sweet, resembling the aroma with notes of toast, roast, and black bread. The mouthfeel is slightly creamy and light bodied - feels right for a lager. Overall this is a nice brew that appreciates - that is I like it more as I drink it.

Pours black with thin brown head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, and liquorice and some cinnamon. Medium bodied with chocolate, and roastiness with lighter lager characteristics. Finishes with a clean hop dryness. Interesting beer. My first schwartz. Good stuff.

Deep dark brown coloration with a foamy tan head. body is medium and the feel is smooth with some sweetness. caramel, chocolate, toffee, raisin flavors. roasted finish. great beer.
