Aromat bardzo intensywny i przyprawowy, dominuje cynamon, później gałka muszkatołowa, słodkie kakao i czekolada raczej na drugim planie. W smaku pełne, wyraziście słodkie i również mega przyprawowe. Ponownie cynamon, słodka czekolada, kakao, a w tle pojawia się smak papryczki i bardzo stonowane rozgrzewanie chili po przełknięciu. Black, very small head, low carbon nation. Aroma: tonka, vanilla, chocolate, pepper. Full body, high sweetness. Flavour: nice swwe chocolate, very subtle pepper. Excellent has dden alcohol.

Bottle, shared at Little Leeds Beer House. Just about black. No head. Nose has scorched pepper. Cinnamon. Dark chocolate. Smells entirely of it’s ingredients. Which is no bad thing. Some vanilla and coconut, too. Taste is sweet and chocolatey. Some light, woody bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel. Some booze. A bit slick and oily. Czarne, nieprzejrzyste. Aromatem już mnie kupiło - uwielbiany przeze mnie cynamon i wanilia. Mega pachnie. W smaku gęsta, likierowa i deserowa czekolada z tonami cynamonu, na finiszu konkretne kakao, chilli wspaniale wkomponowane - rozgrzewa leciutko gardziołko na finiszu. Finally, this legendary American stout has reached my tasting table, in a 75 cl bottle with stylish label, from Bierhalle Deconinck. I have been eager to taste this for a long time. Dense, moussy, deep brownish beige head (a dark head often being a visual sign of a really good stout), settling as a feeble creamy rim with some sparse lacing and a beautiful tan veil in the middle but eventually all but disappearing; completely opaque, jet black beer with ochre tinge visible only one millimeter off the edge and under bright light; very thick pour too, looking like motor oil when pouring it into the glass... Very intense, perfumey, complex and hugely mouthwatering bouquet, fresh cinnamon and cinnamon rolls, lots of intense dark chocolate, chocolate cake and Sachertorte, Belgian chocolates even, cocoa powder, juniper berries (even though not literally used), lots and lots of caramel fudge, kahlua, rum, candi sugar, brownies dough, dried chilli peppers piercing elegantly but not too obtrusively through all this thick spicy sweetness, something smoky (cigars, even burnt wood - but this is probably mainly from the peppers), mocha ice cream, espresso, treacle, bourbon, some faint blood-like iron, liquorish, leather, curry powder and something very vaguely earthy. Intensity in the mouth, too, starting off with a very densely concentrated candied sweetness, candied cherry almost, lots of dried fig-like flavours, sweet ripe brambleberry touch, ripe blue plum, but all bundled in one clean and pungent pack of sweetness - which is very quickly balanced out by a very, very dim background sourish touch and a much more developed, though not exaggerated, vaguely soy sauce-like umami aspect, everything in perfect dosage and perfectly matched against each other. Mouthfeel is unsurprisingly very thick, viscous, glueish even, very heavy and oily, but not cloying, very softly carbonated. A really big, fat dark maltiness lines the entire mouth cavity, beautifully caramelly, nutty and mocha-ish with a very deep, very noble bitter chocolateyness to it, further developing towards the end, aided of course by the actual cocoa nibs which make this taste like some really concentrated chocolate sauce; at the root of the tongue, a roasted, coffeeish, very slightly tobacco-ish roasted bitterness lingers, with a pleasant but pungent black pepper-like hop bitterness accentuating it; this entire bittersweet symphony has lots of spicy tones woven through it, now a lot less juniper berry-like than in the nose, but indeed the cinnamon at first, deceptively bitter but again in a perfectly balanced way, matching completely with the bittersweet character of the malts. The chilli heat sits comfortably in last position alongside a lot of whisky-like alcohol, both working together to add a notably peppery, heating effect that goes down into the throat. The chilli heat is eventually more pronounced than I had expected based on the nose alone but I’m addicted to spicy foods so this is heaven to me. Based on what I heard about this beer, it was a safe assumption that it was going to be good, but this is even way better than expected. The alcohol burn is perhaps a bit on the wry side in the end, but otherwise I cannot find anything wrong here; this is a universe of flavor, so intense, but at the same time of a rare level of technical perfection as well, and showing enormous generosity and purity in terms of ingredients. I am beginning to think that within this popular concept of ’Aztec’-themed stouts, spiced with cocoa and peppers, this may well be the most beautiful one I had so far - at least on a par with Westbrook’s Mexican Cake or Cigar City’s evergreen Hunahpu’s, if not even more fascinating, in its creaminess, thickness and lovely, highly refined sweetness. This is nothing less than divine - one of the best stouts I ever had, and I had a lot. It was not very easy to get my hands on a bottle in Belgium of this year’s release but this was well worth the search - and the money... Epic, this kind of beers are one of the reasons for my zythophilia, I am going to enjoy this to the very last drop - and then sniff the remainders of this thick, intense aroma from an empty glass.
