Dark amber pour. Nose of alcohol and malt. Taste is very tame. Malty, with light hopping aromas and caramel. Taste is also malty, dry and cloyingly sweet.
UPDATED: APR 8, 2018 A murky dark reddish amber barleywine with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with vinous notes, molasses, alcohol warmth, dark fruits, plums, very nice and complex. In mouth, a nice sweet caramel malt with vinous notes, vanilla cookies, resinous and piney hops, light mineral notes, nice and complex, yet very smooth. Bottle at OttBottShare April 2018. Big bottle of the 2013. Wheat wines can be tricky, but either this one is great or age has treated it very well. The aroma is sugary right off the bat, but in a very natural, bready way. Rich notes of toffee, marble rye bread, brown sugar, and raisins. The palate is big and sticky sweet, yet still in good taste. The low carbonation is well suited and alcohol is super well masked. Huge malty flavors wash over the palate. It’s good a good spice to it, almost reminiscent of rye. Bread, caramel, raisins, figs. . . it’s a big and cohesive beer. I highly enjoyed my first 10 oz glass, but I’m not so sure how polishing off this bottle is gonna go. Obviously this kind of beer is better suited in a smaller pour. nice name, makes me think of hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy. Clear amber / orange brown, light brown head. Nice slightly fruity , malty, woody but not bitter woody aroma. Like a uk style barley wine, not much flowery hops bitterness, more euro style hops bitterness, and not that prominent. Flavor is malty, fruity, good balance between sweet and euro bitter, notes of honey, i think The wheat shows in that the beer is much smoother and somewhat grainy sweeter than other barley wines. I have aged the bottle few years, perhaps the hops have been more prominent earlier on. App.: Very deep, rich copper with a thin light tan head.
Aroma: Richly malty, dark dried fruits, deep toffee/treacle/brown sugar, a bit savoury, quite fruity, alcohol is very nicely integrated, minimal hop presence.
Palate: Medium-full body with fairly full, creamy carbonation.
Flav.: Richly malty with lots of dark dried fruits, a little buttery and brothy, burnt sugar, brown sugar, so very malty, no hop flavour to speak of, really big and a bit boozy; sweet with decent bitterness and a long, sweet, malty, boozy finish.
Ooops. Didn’t mean to open such a big, boozy beer on a work night. Oh well!
matured bootle thank you to phaleslu for sending this my way! clear ruby red hu. bit of sherry oxidation. plums, raisins, date fruit character. moderately sweet toffee. on the sweet side, but good enough attenuation on a barley wine gold style ale. not the type of bier i typically reach for these days, but this @ drinkable for a sipes on a night cape sized pour.

Pour on tap, clear orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of big sweet orange, sugar, wheat into some caramel, toffee, slight vanilla into a slight hint of spice. Tasted in July 2013 from a capped 750mL bottle that Adam and I picked up during a baseball trip in St. Louis. Pours clear bronze with an average tan head that leaves thin, spotty lace. The nose is toffee, caramel, some burnt toast, and a bit of light earthy hops. The flavor is toffee and caramel with the same burnt toast and hops form the nose providing bitterness, and a touch of a creamy vanilla note. Deep caramel and strawberry jam accompany honey and candied oranges in this classic rendition of a Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam tops the hazy mahogany.
-Alcohol is well hidden under the sugars.
-Wheat is not showcased at all here, most likely affecting the texture and not much else.
-Maple sugar also morphs within the honey allusions.
-This lacks complexity, but it is able to compensate through comfort creation.
Pours deep amber mostly unclear with a light sandy colored head. The aroma brings sweet but not resiny candy like malts, smooth in the nose. Body and flavor are smooth, sweet and lightly bitter malts interact well and there is no overpowering factor like you usually get in this style.
