Just one sip of this Red Hopped Mama conjures up the history lesson we all learned as kids. Everyone knows the story of Captain Shaddock sailing from East India with pummel seeds in tow on his way to the Caribbean to change the face of fruit forever, but Shaddock could have never imagined that his Barbados forbidden fruit would find its way into the beer glass in front of you. From East India to the West Indies, from Texas to Comstock Park, the short legacy of this 300 year old little fruit that could, continues with you ordering up a cold one.

On tap at HopCat Detroit on 4/29/17. Hazy orange pour with a medium off-white head. Nose of English hops, malt and grapefruit. Malty and citrusy flavor with a floral and soapy finish.

DOC: 3/9/2017

2015 BJCP Category: 29A Fruit Beer (base style: 21A American IPA)

AROMA: Moderate grapefruit peel and slight citrusy hops. Generic base malt. A slight fusel character. 6/12

APPEARANCE: Hazy shade of pale orange. Moderate white foam mostly dissipates. 2/3

FLAVOR: For a fruity IPA is it surprisingly lacking in both fruit and hop flavors. Palette is a general malty/wheat flavor without sweetness. There is a background note of grapefruit peel throughout with a bitter/sour aftertaste. Hops do little to nothing to support the fruit component and offer no particular bitterness. Though fresh, this can seems stale. 8/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body and carbonation. Smooth, but a bit watery. Not refreshing as advertised; aftertaste is a little annoying. Seems about right for 5% ABV, though. 2/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Works as neither an IPA nor a fruit beer. Insipid and boring. 3/10

The appearance is a small very foamy, fizzy white head with a short retention, cloudy golden body and spotty lacing. The aroma is citrus hops, grapefruit, lightly earthy, sweet, and malt. The flavor is lightly bitter, acidic, grapefruit, sour, and sweet. The mouthfeel is watery and this beer is light-medium bodied. This beer is too sour tasting for my liking and thus it is not a beer that I will drink again.

Draft to taster at Cappys pour clear light gold with thin white head. Nose light floral, citrus, and grapefruit. Taste sweet citrus, grapefruit, kiwi. Light bitter finish.

Can: Cloudy, yellow-orange with a white head. Sweet grapefruit, grain aroma. Taste is sweet-tart pink breakfast grapefruit. Very juicy....... Really more of a fruit beer than an IPA......still, its pretty tasty, nicely fruity.... Enjoyable.

Can. Pour is a clean gold with a thin head and aromas of biscuit and an almost sweaty funk. Its a very yeasty smell, but not very IPA-ish. Flavor is more like a grapefruit session IPA in that it has a bit of grapefruit (but not too punchy, kind of sweetened) and then pointlessness.

Tap @ Four Points by Sheraton - DTW: Cloudy reddish gold. Its almost all grapefruit syrup with too many malts in it. Terrible example of a fruit themed IPA.

Pours a hazy light orange color. No head at all. Smells a bit like earth and sour. A sour flavor mixed with watery orange juice.

Draught at the Perrin Brewing Co, Comstock Park, MI. Hazy golden color with a small white head. Fruity aroma. The flavor is sourness, mild bitterness, mild hops and some maltiness. Quite OK. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

can - Hazy gold pour, very citrusy aroma. The flavor is moderately bitter and heavy on the grapefruit. Not being much of a grapefruit fan though I enjoy some notes of it in beer, this was heavy on the fruit for me. Its still a fairly good medium bodied brew.
