Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance was a black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace leaving some sly lace.
The aroma had some smoke, ash/char and roasted malts. Some nuts eventually come out.
The flavor leads with the roasty to char-like taste. Some smoke comes out. Mainly a roasty/char aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Moderate carbonation. ABV felt fine as the brewer projected.

Draft at the brewery. Pours an opaque coffee brown with a tan head that settles into a ring, leaving spots of lace in the glass. Notes of roasted malts, toasted sugar, earth, and dark chocolate. On tap @ Petaluma Hills. Just about black with a tan head. Like many of these types of beers, this is just sort of bland and roasty with some coffee, burnt toast, and earthy hops. Mild to minimal sweetness here. Cocoa powder and a light bitterness on the finish. Tap at the Brewpub. Shiny black with lace. Roasty coffee nose, slightly phenolic, berries. Smooth and dry with coffee and cream flavors.

Draft at the brewery taproom. Pours deep brown with reddish highlights and a creamy tan head. The nose holds some old coffee, light roast, earth. Light to medium sweet flavor with mild roast, dry cocoa, scorched earth, day-old coffee, aged leather. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Dry on the finish, with some more cocoa and coffee. Taste comprises light roast, chocolate coated raisens, tobacco, light charr.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close.

Draught at Petaluma Hills. Opaque black liquid with small to medium tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, biscuit, toast and bread. Taste is light sweet and light bitter with notes of chocolate, light coffee and dried fruit. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Decent.
