Aged? Many beers have a long maturation, but this one has only 24-36 months in oak barrels. Pale? This beer has an old gold to bronze color, rather than the burgundy more common in the breweries of West Flanders. This is the ‘mother beer,’ used in various quantities to blend with the other Petrus beers, and to give them their unique and very distinctive taste. This mother beer is rather sour with a bite like the best Brut Champagnes. A connoisseur’s delight! The only one of its kind on the U.S. market.

Bottle from Lidl, drunk at home. Light yellow with a small amount of visible carbonation and no head to speak of. Aroma of white wine, overripe grapefruit, noticeable funk. Tart taste with a very refreshing and well-carbonated body. Passionfruit and pear drops in the aftertaste. I really like this.

330ml dark bottle, filtered, from a mixed pack of six bought in Lidl for £6.99. This is great fun. It has the qualities of a Flemish red in taste, if not in colour. A drinkable, refreshing sourness, not harsh, just light, clean, yummy, and a bit zingy. But unlike Rodenbach, this is not aged beer blended with young beer, this is 100% aged. It’s not complex, but is wonderfully drinkable. I like it. I like it a lot. This is the Petrus I prefer so far, and I wouldn’t mind ordering a case of this for the summer.

33cl bottle from Alko Kokkola. Pours clear golden with a small, thin white head. Aroma has vinegar, berries and citrus. Flavour is similar. Dry bitter finish.

Clear golden, white head. Aroma is citric, light funk, acetone and hay. Good, sour citrus and acetone flavour. Dry and crisp.

Clear, golden colour with a foamy white head. Light floral aroma with a bit sourness. Taste is fresh, quite dry. Medium body, soft carbonation, light body. It’s ok.

Pours a light blonde colour. Taste is very sour with peach, mango and soured apple flavours. Quite good

Hold da kæft hvor er den syrlig. Uden at have noget mere smag som Lambic ofte har.

Copenhagen 29/6 2017. 33 cl bottle from Fakta. Label is rich in text telling me all about this beers life in a foeder and that this is the "mother beer" and sour as hell. Pours slightly hazy pale yellow with small white bubbly head. Settles as white patch in the middle of the glass. Aroma actually is sour as hell. Sharp, almost chemical sourness bordering on the acidic. Kind of reminds me of acetone - in a good way. Soft carbonation and medium thick palate. Flavor has very subdued sweetness quickly overcome by massive sourness. Aftertaste has intense sourness and vinegar. Austere and consequent. Or to quote the motion picture Alien: "It’s structural perfection is matched only by it’s hostility"

mviljamaa (176) - Jyväskylä, FINLAND - JUN 28, 2017
Pours with a thin lace. Color is clear, lager like. Aroma is fresh and has pear cider, apple cider, some lemon sourness, potato crisps, just a little bit of malt. Palate is quite dryish, but nice. Sour beer like taste has tropical fruits, citrus fruits and a orange juice like "bite". Elegant development and a dry aftertaste. Very refreshing and solid. Cider-like, but "platinum"-like elegancy.

AndreaSputo (11) - San Vincenzo Valle roveto, ITALY - JUN 27, 2017
Equilibrata. Buon tartarico, lieve malto, lieve citrico. Amaro corretto. Palato piacevole. Persistenza media.
