Aged? Many beers have a long maturation, but this one has only 24-36 months in oak barrels. Pale? This beer has an old gold to bronze color, rather than the burgundy more common in the breweries of West Flanders. This is the ‘mother beer,’ used in various quantities to blend with the other Petrus beers, and to give them their unique and very distinctive taste. This mother beer is rather sour with a bite like the best Brut Champagnes. A connoisseur’s delight! The only one of its kind on the U.S. market.

Lemon candy nose with spicy notes. Pours medium gold with a typically Belgian fluffy head. Taste is sour lemon drops with some pine bitterness and quinine tang. Fair, but not great.

I popped the cap and poured it into my Cigar City snifter and it arrives a very clear orange color. It has a thin bubbly white head on top but that quickly dissipates into the liquid. The nose hits you with apple cider vinegar right up front. There are hints of oak in there as well. The taste has a nice ACV bite up front that then goes tart. Sour apples and maybe even a little lemon in there. It finishes dry and crisp.

Draught at ’t Kraantje, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Clear pale golden colour with average size white head. Intriguing Lambic like sourness in aroma. And this really is sour. Tart, berries, acidity and malt. Very tasty.

From the bottle. It pours golden with a beautiful tall lasting white head. The aroma is very tart and complex with citrus, lemon, orange, leather and funk. The flavor is less tart and more acidic with notes of vinegar and a nice balancing sweet fruitiness with tangerine and peaches. Some more tropical notes toward the finish before a leathery and citrus peel ending. Very nice under the radar sour ale.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Tulip. Appearance: Slightly hazy golden-blonde with nice, foamy white cap. Some sticky lacing. Aroma: Major apple cider going on here - both sweet and tart. Some light pepper as well. Oak becomes noticeable as it warms. Taste: Very tart and peppery. Somewhat sweet apple, oak and clove provide an additional layer of complexity, but it is the tart, peppery profile that carries from start to finish. Some hoppy bitter notes at the end as well. Palate: Moderately high carbonation, fairly light body, nice dry finish. Overall: I was surprised by how peppery this is, but that seems to make it more refreshing and appealing. Also, despite the onslaught on the taste buds, there is still a nice, soft character beneath that really makes this a fantastic sipper.

Pours clear golden with a large, fluffy white head. Smells sour, a touch hoppy and a touch malty. Tastes really sour with a touch of vanilla and malty sweetness underneath. Light-bodied with a wet texture and decent mouth-carbonation, Petrus Aged Pale finishes with a nice sourness that fades almost to sweetness.
