Petrus Aged Red is constructed from a base of Double Brown Ale. 15% Petrus Aged Pale is added to provide a dry character to the brew and give it a slight sour essence. Finally the brewer adds fresh cherries, which are evident in the rich thick head. Petrus Aged Red is a perfect blend of sweet and sour with a cherry undertone which makes this brew remarkably drinkable at 8.5% ABV.

One of the latest additions to the Petrus range, a catch-all brand under which De Brabandere tries to gather every basic Belgian beer style they did not brew traditionally, resulting in a bunch of mostly completely unrelated beers. This is the kriek in this range, though it is not called a kriek on the label. Based on Petrus Dubbel Bruin with some Petrus Aged Pale and then there are, of course, the so-called added cherries. Off-pink, dense, lacing head over a bright ruby red beer. Aroma of (a lot of) sugared cherry juice and red jam, cassis, caramel, red beetroot (colorant?), candi sugar. Sweet, sugary onset, cherry jam and cherry bonbons, light mouthfeel on a caramelly malt basis, grenadine-like sweetness continues well into the finish, a bit sticky but still bearably so, with a light, dull and even somewhat lemonade-like sourishness and a faint and brief echo of deafened, earthy hops. I expected a sour ale, perhaps not as dry and sour cherry-like as e.g. De Ranke Kriek, but at least less sweet than what I got. Still, if Im honest and despite not liking sweet fruit beers, this one still feels relatively natural and has retained its beery main character under all that sweetness; I had way worse in this style. Belongs to the new league of top-fermented sweet red beers based on (usually dark) Belgian ales, so I think this is best compared to Kasteelbier Rouge, Delirium Red, La Gauloise Fruits Rouge, Corsendonck Rousse and the like - and in that specific context, this is quite alright and even above most of its peers. That being said, making a kriek of pure Petrus Aged Pale with actual sour cherries instead of sweet ones would have been a much better idea, instead of blandly trying to cash in on this high strength, top-fermented, sweet red beer trend.

Tasted on 14.09.15. Intensive aroma of cherry wine. Small head disappearing to ring. Clear dark ruby colour. Sweet cherry taste with delicate acidity. Malty caramel backbone almost unnoticeable. Sweetness, sourness and a bit of well-hidden alcoholic bitterness in aftertaste.

Bottle (11.2 fl.oz). Clear dark red-brown with a medium pink-white head that stabilises to a firm film. Nose offers plenty of fresh cherries with background marzipan, candy floss and faint red wine vinegary notes. Taste is candied cherry sweetness with those subtle sour notes at coming through mid palate before a sweet finish. ABV is well hidden. Medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Needs more sourness for me - blend it with Petrus Aged Pale to achieve this.
