Petrus Aged Red is constructed from a base of Double Brown Ale. 15% Petrus Aged Pale is added to provide a dry character to the brew and give it a slight sour essence. Finally the brewer adds fresh cherries, which are evident in the rich thick head. Petrus Aged Red is a perfect blend of sweet and sour with a cherry undertone which makes this brew remarkably drinkable at 8.5% ABV.

0.33 l bottle. Pours very deep red/brown color with long lasting off white head. Strong sour cherry and some bready notes in aroma. It has a multidimensional taste, starting with sour and tart cherry, then some brown ale notes: toffee and bread, warm alcohol and at the and, cherry again. Short sour finish, medium body, well hidden ABV. Interesting, pleasant beer.

Draft sample at Tilburg Bierfestival 2016 Tilburg, The Netherlands. 26.06.2016. Pour it dark red color with small white head. Aroma sweet cherry feel. Taste sticky, candy sugar cherrie feel, too much sweet at the end as well. Ah!

Bottle to tumbler Consummation: Cloying caramel and port which transitions to sour cherry Adjunct: Dark brownish red with a creamy 2 cm head; aroma is cherry candy with earthy notes; the first taste was way too sweet, but it grew on me and I was able to finish the bottle. This was not for me, but a good effort.

Marrón rojizo con transparencia, espuma baja muy buena adherencia. Ésteres a cereza altos, madrea, roble, malta maltoso moderado, lúpulo bajo-nulo, dulce cherry, ligera acidez. En boca ésteres a cereza altos, malta maltoso moderado, notas a madera, roble, dulce cherry, lúpulo de amargor nulo, fenoles a pimienta, acidez propia y correcta, tibieza alcohólica y umami. Final maltoso-esteroso a cereza, fresco, ácido y licoroso, cuerpo bajo, carbonatación regular.

Deep brown-amber color with a white head. Medicinal cherry aroma and taste. Too sweet for my liking. Notes: Atomic Liquors’ Sour Saturday ’15

2015 BJCP Category: 29A Fruit Beer (base style: 23C Oud Bruin)

AROMA: Authentic cherry puree, very sweet like a pie or a soda. Sourness is evident and complements the cherries well. No distinct base brew aromas, though. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Beautiful red wine-like shade of deep ruby; clear. Small, off white foam; some lacing. 3/3

FLAVOR: Cherry throughout. Slightly tart up front, but grows richer throughout the swig. Gentle sour bite at first, but fades. Fruit tastes authentic like pie (doesn’t taste like cough medicine). Some oak and vanilla character in the background. Simple, but tasty. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; low CO2 with a noticeable viscosity. Lingering cherry flavor. Alcohol warmth is moderate but not distracting. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Authentic sweet cherry taste is impressive, as is the blending of the base brews. Wish it was more sour, though. 9/10

Just the one! Firstly tasted this Petrus, I was just amazed! Starting from an invigorating, saturated, strong aroma, which turns to smell like a cherry blossom, but nothing near to Eau de Cologne, it comes to a full-bodied, strong, unforgettable taste. I thought it tasted more like Port wein, than beer. The only drawback is a slightly increased sourness, not covered by nice cherry sweetness. But, from all the other sides it’s close to be perfect! And, of course, it leaves behind all the kriek lambics just piece of cake. A cherry cake!
