Bottle: Filtered
A blend of 33% Petrus Aged Pale, pure barrel aged beer that has been aged for two years in oak barrels, and 67% young brown beer. In this blend, the young dark beer contributes the reddish-brown colour and the Aged Pale contributes the slightly sour flavour. Petrus Roodbruin is a typical Flemish red ale as tradition dictates.

RedHaze (371) - Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA - JAN 14, 2007
Pours brown with some dark ruby hints with a one inch head that settles slowly to a rocky cap, leaving behind a nice webbing of lace. Smell; sour and fruity, with cherries and plums. Some of the oakiness is there, but not as powerful as I was expecting, and there’s a little bit of chocolate in there as well. Taste; The oak flavors come out more than the aroma led me to believe they would. There’s a nice sour fruitiness, with cherries, plums and maybe a touch of raspberries. It’s a bit drying in the finish due to the oak barrel aging. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, and is pretty easy to drink, even with the dryness.

Pours ruby brown. Musty aroma of oak and berries. Has a tart fruity flavor but it isn’t overwhelmingly tart like some beers of this style. I like how this beer manages to have the characteristics of a Oud Bruin without being too much. Oak characteristics shine through.

Clear ruby, thin tan head. Sourish, fruity-waxy snout. Raspberryish tartness and gentle oakiness, nicely balanced by a sweet, slightly smoky malt finish. Interesting but not quite delicious.

Bottle. Vinegar and sour cherry aroma. Dark reddish brown color with moderate head. Lightly sour cherry/raisin malt flavor. Light mouthfeel. Metallic aftertaste. Okay but not great.

Bottle. Offwhite small creamy and very quickly disappearing head. Very dark clear red brown body. Weak acidic caramel aroma. Lemon caramel flavor with a good deal of carbonation.

Dark brown color with a medium head. Moderate sour aroma with a hint of cherry. Good semi-sweet malt flavor with a bit of oak. The sourness is not heavily pronounced. Just a little bitterness on the end.

250 ml bottle - pours dark, dark brown, with a large off-white head. Aroma of sour grapes and malt vinegar and some graininess as well. Flavour less boldly sour than the nose, and more complex, too. Sour red cherries, red plums, and grapes with a quick wave of smoky malt near the back of the palate. Fading sourness at the end, and a very dry finish. I like this one.

Bottle from Bier Temple, Brussels. Deep burgundy in colour with a small white island floating just at the surface. I assume this is the head. Typical nose of the Flemish sour ales - balsamic vinegar, brown sugar and granary bread. Taste of apple cider, sour cherry and caramel. Nicely subtle tartness with a finish of walnuts. A tasty holiday treat! Not the best example of this style, but not the worst.

Bottle from Whole Foods. Poours a dark maroon color. Sweet vinous tart aromas. Slightly tart flavors up front with quite a bit of roasted maltiness. Not super sour for the style. Well balanced between the roasted maltiness and the tartness.
